Old vs. New – McLaren 720S and McLaren 750S Drag Race

February 13th, 2024

We auto enthusiasts always want to know whether the old style is best or if the new version offers advantages. Carwow is all set to figure that out as it pertains to the entry-level McLaren. Will the tried-and-true 720S remain the standard or will the new 750S take the crown?

Safe to say, these two cars are like two sides of the same pillow. The 750S utilizes many of the same features as the time tested 720S. Either car is available as a Coupe or a Spider. The Spider is akin to a convertible. Both cars are carbon fiber monocoque shells riding on aluminum frames with a rear-wheel drive, rear engine design. This platform yields a well-balanced feel and superior handling.

These British bombshells both use 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions outfitted with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and launch control.

One of the few differences between these two McLarens is maximum engine output. A twin turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine is used in both cars. Engine composition is all-aluminum with port fuel injection. The 720S is capable of making 720hp (568 lb.-ft. of torque) at peak RPM, while the 750S makes subtle variations in tuning to produce 750hp and 590 lb.-ft. of torque.

The weight difference between the two supercars is negligible with the 720S tipping the scale at 3,128-pounds and the 750S coming at 3,062-pounds.

Line ‘em up and let ‘em run.
