Drag Week Goes East Coast – Tesla Record & 4Runner Wheelie

September 11th, 2019

Once again, it’s time for that drag racing event that punishes competitors like a working staycation – Hot Rod Drag Week. These crews and cars will be faced with racing on four dragstrips in five days. In order to get to the various locations, they will have to traverse over 1,000-miles (most of them pulling a travel trailer). Bonds of friendship will be forged and cars will be broken. In the end, the last man standing will be crowned king.

The action begins at the Virginia Motorsports Park. After numerous and lengthy rain delays, we are told that everyone gets a single pass. That’s one time down the track to make your number and move on to the next track.

Racing kicks off with a crazy Toyota 4Runner. With a stock 1JZ engine and a big turbo, this guy is throwing the front wheels up in the air like he just don’t care. What a way to start. The crowd loves it!

Next, the Escona Boys post a 6.30-second pass at 230 mph in their big tire Vega. These guys are dialed-in this year. Watch out. Before the Esconas can enjoy their lead, Tom Bailey rolls up in his Pro Mod Camaro and puts up a 6.28-second pass @ 234 mph.

Real Street Performance is on hand with a pair of Toyota Supra machines that are out of this world. Their Mk IV Supra blew the tires off coming out of the hole and still managed a 9.07-second pass @ 185 mph. The other is a Zupra – ‘Nuff said.

From Texas, we have an 8-second (1,100hp) Chevrolet Bel Air. It has a 6.0-liter aluminum V8 and a massive turbo. After struggling to get the transmission (4L80E) repaired before day one, the ECU loses power and only posts a 10-second run. The owner is faced with finding the problem and getting to the next venue before tomorrow.

Lot’s more action on this one. Don’t miss it!
