vw beetle documentary: the shape of quality (3/3)
This australian vw beetle documentary is called: the shape of quality. This documentary focusses on the technical issues of beetle production in Australia in de early '60s.
That makes the documentary less interesting for the general public, butr even more for insiders: people who are 'into the beetle'.
For instance: it strikes me to see that during beetle production the window rubbers are put into place manually with a hammer, with the risk of damaging the fresh painted body. Also the use of a thread to push the rubber in place from the inside of the car is easy to see.
The film was directed by Fred Schepisi.

how long does a vw beetle float? Just watch!

In July 2007, I received an email from Lew Wood, the actor who appears in this commercial. He tells:
I am the guy tha D-D-B chose to be the spokesman for that famous "Floating VW" TV commercial in June , 1972.
My name is Lew Wood, and I was doing commercials and V/O's in NYC when I was booked for the job. We shot it at a launching ramp in Stamford, CT on LI Sound. The production crew was Horn-Greiner. Director Norm Greiner. D-D-B's creative director was Tom Yobaggy. And even Mr. Bernbach was on the location!
They hired a stuntman to drive the VW into the water. However, Norm Greiner suddenly woke up to the fact that I had to deliver that last line "Now, what other car gives you this kind of quality at this kind of price?" from the car! I said, "Norm, I'm a sailor, I'm at home on the water. I'll drive it in!"
I splashed it three times. (We used three identical Beetles, all burnt orange in color. Splashed two of them alternately, the third never got wet and was used for "beauty shots." Swimmers went in to tow them back to shore after each take.
We all thought our commercial would win the "Clio" that year, but the "Snowplow" commercial took the prize.
However, the residuals were nice!
After many years of searching for a 1972 Super Beetle in burnt orange with NO RUST, I finally found one a few years ago in Vista, CA, and snapped it up. I now proudly drive around town frequently and get admiring looks.
Now, you know "the rest of the story!"
This commercial has a surprise in it. At the and you can watch a beetle being driven into the water. Funny is the text in the commercial says: allthough the beetle does definately float, it will not float indefinately. Fun!

Zsa Zsa Gabor in a vw beetle commercial: take 2
http://www.painteddesigns.nl
Nice early '70s commercial featuring Zsa Zsa Gabor and her mother. Funny is the bad English. You can hardly understand Zsa Zsa's mother when she speaks: "with daugthers like mine, you learn the value of a dollar!".
Being Hungarian, she sounds like the French trying to speak English.
Don't forget to watch a take of this commercial in which you can see how Zsa Zsa apes and uses strong language when things go a little different than she is used to.

1973 commercial superbeetle

This 1973 commercial really brings you back to the '70s. Especially the romantic violin music at the end is great. Gives you that luxurious feeling, don't you agree? Not very special, but one of my favourites.

Watch these 2 crash tests under similar conditions and wonder: if you were to choose: what car would do you prefer to drive, a beetle or a golf (rabbit)? Feel free to post your conclusion!
I think the crash speed in this German ADAC test is approx. 50 km/h (30 miles/h). Music: Brad sucks - Making me nervous

sleeper vw bug
I took a 60 vw bug that was sitting for 25 years, rebuilt a motor for it, and took it to the track. Didnt even wash it! to Prove whats on the outside isnt what counts. Its what we DONT see that does. Motor is all VW with stock block clearenced for stroker crank, stock crank is welded stroker, has 92mm pistons to equal 2180, vw heads ported, and dual IDF webber carbs. mild 125 engle cam. I know its not a super fast car like most other videos on here, but for what it is, a stock bug with skinny 165 metric tires, and a stock vw motor with very old hot rod technology, it does pretty good. The way it is I a ran a 13.41@100mph on the stock tires.

1952 vw beetle commercial: oldest EVER!
http://www.painteddesigns.nl
One of the earliest vw commercials in existance. It's origin ins german and it is made in de late '40s or early '50s, not later than 1953.
Did you notice that the car in de beginning of the clip isn't even a real beetle? It's a model, pulled forward with a thread. In the first second you can even see the shadow of a hand pushing the model!

Tipical vw beetle commercial: competition in the snow!
http://www.painteddesigns.nl
One of my favourites! So tipically Doyle Dane Bernbach. The beetle as the underdog of course comes out as the winner. Even the beetle horn at the end of the clip sounds modest. Very subtile!
