The third-generation Mustang was produced by Ford Motor Company from 1979 to 1993. Built on Ford's ubiquitous Fox platform, it evolved through a number of sub-models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its production life. It underwent a multi-faceted update for 1987, and for a time seemed destined for replacement with a rebadged import before company executives were swayed by consumer opinions. Enthusiasts group the generation into two segments: the 1979-1986 cars, with their quad headlight arrangement, and the 1987-1993 cars, with their "no-grille" front fascia styling. Production ended with the introduction of the SN95 fourth-generation Mustang for the 1994 model year.

Real Drivers: 1985 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 (Drag Racer)
See more at . The goal of the Real Drivers series has always been to explain the passion and sensation behind the ownership of interesting cars, but this piece was something more. While I have had a great many opportunities to film a wide variety of vehicles, I don't think any shoot thus far has inspired such a deep change for me more than my two days spent with Michael Murphy and his 302-powered Mustang. This shoot was more than simply an interview; it was a moment of realization, not just of why I like cars and why I have a passion for all things automotive, but of the commitment it takes to truly build your vehicle, to create from a clean slate a vehicle as you envision it. Michael Murphy's 5.0 has changed everything I believed about what it means to build a car, and given me a new perspective on automotive passion. There is, however, too much to fit into a YouTube description - I'll let you listen to Murphy explain his car in the video above. Thanks for this video goes to Michael Murphy and his family for their time and generosity (and patience), and to Alex Griswold. Facebook: Twitter:
