67-68 Cougar Buying Guide: What To Look For
In this video, Don does a detailed inspection on a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 to show some of the things you should look for when buying one of these classic cars. Some of the insight here can potentially save you hundreds, even thousands, when you go to negotiate with a seller. Also, it will help those of you trying to sell, to more accurately advertise the strengths and weaknesses of your car. We've also done a similar video with a 1970 Cougar convertible, so you may want to check that out too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fizb2vo68vA To look up the parts mentioned in this video, visit http://www.cougarpartscatalog.com Subscribe to our channel to keep up with our latest uploads! 1971 COUGAR FOR SALE
1971 Cougar, XR7 Convertible; Laser straight, all original, pretty! Only 70,300 original miles, Always kept in heated garage. • 351 ci V8 Cleveland • Power top with glass window, works GREAT! • 2-BBL original Carburetor • Automatic Transmission • Power Brakes/Front Disc • Leather Interior • NEW DUAL Exhaust • AM/FM -- tape (also have an 8 track to throw in), & Clock. • Power Steering and handgrip horn • Sequential Turn Signals • Magnum 500 wheels It Runs Beautifully. Draws a lot of attention, wherever we go. Most people believe it reminds them of a Cutlass or Cuda from the back/side. No rips in the top. The body is super-solid. Only 1 small ding (Maybe 2-3" wide-which I took a pic of). I had ½ pint of the paint mixed this week. ALL THE CHROME IS EXCELLENT!! All glass is excellent. Everything works as it should, except the clock, (I haven't looked to see why yet). Runs smooth, fingertip steering. Everything is tight. Needs nothing! If I keep it, I would buy another parade boot-this one is the original and in good-fair condition. It wouldn't take much to be a perfect show car. If you are looking for a solid, original, 1970's convertible in great shape, you will not be disappointed. Look below at the rarity of this vehicle, there were only 1,717 made. As the 1971 commercial said "It's where wild meets elegance". ..haha, the original ad is on youtube. We are asking below "low retail" for NADA, this vehicle is definitely closer to "high retail" shape ! Production of the 1971 Mercury Cougar: • 2-door hardtop: 34,008 • Convertible: 1,723 • XR-7 2-door hardtop: 25,416 • XR-7 convertible: 1,717 Engines for the 1971-1973 Mercury Cougar: Type Size horsepower Years ohv V-8 351 240/285* 1971 ohv V-8 351 168/262/266** 1972 ohv V-8 351 168/264** 1973 ohv V-8 429 370* 1971 "The 1971-1973 Mercury Cougar was the last of the Cougar pony cars. They shared an enlarged new body/chassis design with the third-generation Ford Mustangs, but rode a five-inch longer wheelbase. Still, the 1971-73s are worth collector consideration, especially XR-7 hardtops -and the super-rare ragtops! 1971 Mercury Cougar; XR7 2 Door Convertible Pricing Original MSRP Low Retail Average Retail High Retail $3,877 $10,000 $18,700 $30,700 Options: (add options) ADD-351/240 HP V8 ENG 15% 15% 15% ADD-AIR CONDITIONING 10% 10% 10% TOTAL PRICE $3,877 $12,500 $23,375 $38,375
