MGB GT restoration part 15, Terry's
Welcome to another Terry's MG B GT restoration blog.
I know I said on the video September 2008 when I really should have said
September 2009, I get nervous in front of the camera and I like to take the
video in one take, so that means I dont edit any mistakes. Next step is get
the Engine & Gearbox back into the MG. Question is do I put them in
together or put them in separately one at a time ? Will have to think about
that because I have not got allot of room.
MGB GT restoration part 13, Terry's
MGB GT restoration part 13, done most of the work so far this winter in my
back garden shed. As you can see from the Block I have some sort of method
every thing is bagged up and stacked up ready to be put back on the Engine
Block. Painted the Engine with 3 coats of Gloss Black Enamel Engine paint.
Main Bearings to the Crank Shaft fitted also the end Plates to the Block,
then transferred the Block to my Garage and attached to the Engine Stand
ready for the final rebuild.

MGB GT restoration part 17, Terry's.
Hi again another blog number 17. Nearly ready to replace the Engine and
Gearbox back in to the car. Engine Mountains on. Just a few little bits and
bobs then its the big push, next step is to modify the Gearbox Crossmember
(it will make it easier to refit so I am told) get a few mates around and
then get the Engine / Gearbox back into the car.
Rare OverDrive Unit found for the '37 School Bus
A friend of ours had this right down the street from us, and gave us a real
good deal on it.. He bought it brand new in 1982, put it on his truck,
drove it for about 40 miles, and sold the truck.. He took the overdrive
unit out though before selling the truck, intending on using it in another
truck later on, but never did.. We bought it from him still new in the box,
with all the manuals and paper work..
It's a "Double Torque 2XT" , and was made by Power Torque Industries, Inc.
Company, in Arlington, Texas..
It was made to bolt onto this SM465 G.M. four speed truck transmission that
we are using..
We understand this company sold out to "Advanced Adaptors" and they
continued building this same unit with very little changes.. They are now
called the "Ranger Torque Splitter". .
They no longer have the Eaton electric solenoid though, as the earlier
units did, and have gone to strickly manual shift.. Although we have the
electric solenoid, we decided to manual shift ours also..
These units are basically like having an additional transmission, one in
front of the other.. Instead of the standard 4 forward speed and reverse,
we now have the option of having 8 forward speeds, and 2 speed reverse..
According to the manual, this unit is actually better than a standard 5
speed transmission in fuel economy.. You only get a 17 % increase in
economy with the 5 speed, and a 33 % with this unit..
"A typical 4-speed driven at 55 MPH in 4th gear would have an engine RPM of
2450. That same transmission with the 2XT added, driven at 55 MPH in 8th
gear would have an engine RPM of 1830, a drop of 33 % in engine RPM..
Another good thing about this unit, over the "Gear Vendors" overdrive unit,
is that It is a better design being mounted on the engine, instead of the
rear of the transmission, as it never sees the multiplied torque, like the
Gear Vendors units, which see 6 to 7 times the torque.
We were glad to get this over drive unit, as with our 410 rear end gear
ratio, it was going to be bad on gas.
