Mazda Protege 1.6L coil pack replacement
Here's the procedure to replace these coil packs on 99-01 Mazda Protege with the 1.6L ZM-DE. The only actual tool you will need is a 10mm socket and ratchet. For whatever reason, these coil packs have a tendency to short to the valve cover under load. If you get a miss on one of these, start the car at night, let it warm up and watch around the coil packs. If one is going bad, you can see and hear the spark snapping across when you wing the throttle quickly. ALSO....the coil packs have replaceable rubber plug boots on the bottom. Be sure they are replaced with every wire change since they can cause the same symptoms. Lastly, this info does not apply to the 1.8L and 2.0L FS and FP engines...they have coil packs but a different design and located away from the valve cover.
