Un lujoso familiar con una extraordinaria polivalencia de uso La berlina del segmento alto de la marca de los cuatro anillos se denomina A6 y se ofrece en una variante de carrocería familiar o ranchera que Audi denomina Avant. En 2000 la marca alemana lanzó la primera generación de una versión todocamino del A6 Avant que denominó allroad y estaba preparada para afrontar caminos, pistas y zonas nevadas. Tras el éxito de esta primera generación, en 2006 llegaba la segunda y el pasado mes de marzo se lanzaba la tercera. La clave para convertir el A6 Avant en un todocamino está en una suspensión neumática que permite aumentar la distancia libre al suelo en 4,5 centímetros y en la tracción integral permanente quattro. Para desplazamientos sobre terrenos irregulares se incluyen un indicador del ángulo de inclinación y un asistente para el descenso de pendientes. El A6 allroad mide 4,94 metros de longitud, 1,90 de anchura y 1,47 de altura. La carrocería sigue el principio de construcción ligera de Audi, con aproximadamente un 20% en aluminio. Pesa aproximadamente un 15% menos que una construcción equiparable realizada íntegramente en acero. El sistema de tracción a la cuatro ruedas quattro utiliza un diferencial central que Audi estrenaba con los A5 para sustituir al anterior Torsen y denomina "de corona". Trabaja de forma puramente mecánica y cuando el coche circula en línea recta sobre asfalto seco, manda un 40% de la fuerza de impulsión al eje delantero y un 60% al trasero. Sobre piso deslizante el reparto de la fuerza puede variar, de modo que al eje delantero llegue hasta un 70% y al trasero hasta un 85%. La unidad probada contaba con el motor más potente de la gama, el diésel 3.0 TDI de 313 CV. Este motor de 6 cilindros en uve es de tipo biturbo, de modo que una válvula une los dos turbocompresores dispuestos en línea. A bajas revoluciones, la válvula permanece cerrada y el turbocompresor pequeño, con su geometría de turbina variable, realiza el trabajo. A partir de las 2.500 rpm, la válvula comienza a abrirse y el turbocompresor pequeño va cediendo progresivamente el trabajo principal al grande. Entre las 3.500 y las 4.000 rpm la válvula se abre por completo, y entonces sólo funciona el turbocompresor grande.
