Gilbert Staepelaere n'est plus! 1937-1996 (Champion's RTBF)

HSCC VW Beetle Snetterton 300 (Race 1)
This was my first time at Snetterton and due to an oil down qualifying was cut short, so I had to use race 1 to learn the circuit. The first corner was carnage with at least 8 cars damaged, the worst being Robyns and Brians Anglias which hit each other hard but fortunatly knowone was hurt. On the restart I started 18th out of the 30 cars remaining. The Beetle had braking issues all weekend. The bias was set to maximum rear and yet the fronts were locking up at the slightest touch meaning I had to brake gently and super early which cost me a number of positions. I got totally mugged for example on the first lap by Mike and Adrians Anglia and Imp under the bridge through Brundle corner and the hairpin was hard work. I'll try softer 'fast road' pads for the next round and save the racing pads for when i'm running stickier semi slick tyres in the BeetleChallenge series. Finished the race where I started in 18th place (2nd in class) half a second behind Davids 1293 Mini Cooper S. My quickest lap was 2 min 36.2 seconds. In the Championship I've moved up in the points (1151-1300cc class) up from 7th position to tying with Tim Harbers Mini Cooper S for 4th in class. 1965 swing axle Beetle, CSP disc brakes all round, 1285cc, 44 Webers, Engle FK10 cam, reworked stock heads with stock sized valves, cooling by 12 inch electric fan and ram air pipes, approx 120-125bhp@ 8000rpm. Bears close ratio gearbox with a Quaife ATB diff, Dunlop historic crossply tyres, weight around 740kg with driver. Front suspension: Stock beam, springs and rubber bushes, adjustable Formula Vee anti-roll bar, 2.5" dropped spindles, Quantum double adjustable motorsport dampers. Rear suspension: Stock springs and rubber bushes, lowered 2 splines, custom made heavy duty adjustable Z-bar, Quantum double adjustable motorsport dampers.
