Whelen Motorsports Grand Am Rolex 24 Recap -2013
The Rolex 24 at Daytona has come and gone. One of the most grueling races in the world and the most difficult on the schedule for 2013, the Marsh Racing team has walked away from the track 15th in points along with some results that will allow them to have a good start to the season. The weekend started strong for the #31 Whelen Motorsports / Team Fox Corvette at Daytona International Speedway. Throughout the practice sessions, the car struggled to find rear grip on acceleration. After some changes to the setup developed at the Roar Before the 24, the car was running decent lap times inside the top ten of the GT class. The early changes allowed Eric, Lawson, and Brandon to get as much seat time as possible before the twenty-four hour sprint. Starting the race in 19th, Eric quickly gained many spots and turned as many laps as possible in his two hour first stint before handing the car over to Brandon Davis for the first night stint. Towards the end of Brandon's first stint, he noticed that there was an issue with the brakes. After bringing the car into the garage, the team decided to retire the car for the night and resolve the braking problems in the morning. With the brake issue remedied, the #31 Corvette returned to the track in the late hours of the morning after the fog had cleared. Another problem would soon arise that retired the car for good. The change in the suspension height, to allow the car to get power down sooner on the infield section of the track, meant that the car was dragging on the banking. After Lawson ran countless laps, the asphalt finally ate through the metal and created a hole in the fuel cell. The #31 would retire with two hours remaining in the race. "This weekend wasn't exactly what we were looking for in our Whelen / Team Fox Corvette. However, we learned a lot in our first attempt at one of the most difficult races in the world. The race turned out to be a really good test for the car, so we ran it like a test after the brake issue. The results that we walked away from the track with this weekend will help to improve our #31 Corvette for the rest of the season." "Boris and I will be back together for the remainder of the season, starting at Circuit of the Americas at the end of February. With everything that we have learned, we will make sure we run up front often during the 2013 racing season. The Marsh Racing guys are working really hard to make sure of that."
