Bentley's new flagship model brings back the Mulsanne nameplate last used in 1992, and replaces the Bentley Arnage. The Mulsanne was unveiled at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, on 16 August 2009. Coupe and convertible variants are expected to follow at some point as replacements for the Arnage-based Brooklands and Azure respectively.[5] Like the Arnage, the Mulsanne retains the iconic 6.75 L (6750 cc/411 in³) OHV V8 engine, albeit heavily modified to meet Euro V emissions regulations. To achieve improved fuel consumption, the re-designed engine is lighter and features cylinder de-activation and variable cam phasing.[6] Unlike the less expensive Bentley Continental Flying Spur and Bentley Continental GT, the Mulsanne shares very few components with other marques in the Volkswagen Group.[7] The Mulsanne is also notable as it is the first flagship car to be independently designed by Bentley Motors in nearly 80 years; the last being W.O. Bentley's iconic 8 litre model in 1930.[8] Afterward, most Bentleys had shared platforms with Rolls-Royce cars.[7] The Mulsanne aims to recreate as much of Bentley's heritage as possible. For instance, the stainless steel knobs on the dashboard that control the vent plungers are electronic micro switches that send signals to the digital servos that handle the job. However, Bentley engineers painstakingly replicated the feedback of a precisely polished steel rod sliding over smooth felt to pull a soft leather damper closed.[9] Other touches of Bentley history include the very large wheels with small sidewalled tyres, which give an echo of the ride comfort qualities of 1920's Bentleys. In the United Kingdom, the 2011 Mulsanne costs from £225,900 and in the US from $285,000. The first vehicle produced, chassis number one, was sold in August 2009 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance auction for $550,000.[10] Each car takes twelve weeks to produce,[11] and customers will have a choice of 114 paint colours, 21 carpet colours, nine wood veneers and 24 interior leather hides, and be able to specify a custom colour scheme. Additionally, the car has more advanced technology compared with the Arnage, and can be specified to feature a Naim 2200w audio system complete with MP3 compatibility, with Bluetooth and an advanced MMI capability. At the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Executive Interior Concept (EIC) contains many technologies commonly found in offices to assist executives while on the road. The rear passenger area features three LCD screens powered by an Apple Mac mini located in the trunk, with additional iPads in fold out trays connected through Bluetooth keyboards. As an alternative, each headrest is equipped with its own 8-inch screen, enabling passengers to select their own entertainment and listening in private through high quality Bluetooth headphones. Both rear passengers can work on documents or files independently, email, browse the internet, make video calls or play music or games. The picnic tables are cleverly designed so that the keyboards can be easily removed and placed on the user's lap for added comfort. Bespoke finishing touches Both the Theatre and iPad Specifications of Mulsanne Executive Interior can be specified with a range of finishing touches including a Tibaldi fountain pen from its specially commissioned Collection which will be hand veneered to match the car and is discretely stowed in a dedicated dock in the centre armrest. And seen on a Bentley for the first time, a distinctive Yachting-style veneer of either Dark Wenge with a Maple Pinstripe or Maple using the Dark Wenge as the pinstripe motif. The Ferocia is the big brother of the 458 Italia and takes many features of design over from that car, but in it's own way. It runs on a properly monstrous 630hp V10. It stampedes from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of almost 210mph. The Ferocia is built to be ferocious, leading to it's name (Ferocia - Ferocity in Italian). UPDATE APRIL 2013: President Obama on Wednesday proposed sweetened tax incentives and subsidies to spur the market for alternative-power cars and trucks, promoting his "all of the above" energy strategy while warning against other politicians' "quick fixes" to the latest spike in gasoline prices. Mr. Obama made his fourth trip in less than six months to North Carolina, an election battleground state he won narrowly in 2008, to describe his ideas at the Daimler Trucks North America manufacturing plant near Charlotte. There, he was met with news that his support in the state has inched higher but that more residents still disapprove of how he is handling his job and the economy than approve of it, according to a poll by Elon University and The Charlotte Observer newspaper. The president called for increasing to $10,000 an existing $7,500 credit per vehicle for consumers and businesses that buy cars and trucks powered by electric battery, natural gas or hydrogen. He would also expand the technologies that qualify and allow buyers to benefit at the time of purchase, by transferring the credit to the dealer or financier. The credit's enhanced value would bring the purchase price of alternative-energy vehicles more in line with conventional models, supporters say. Partly because of the vehicles' costs, sales have been a problem. General Motors announced last week that it was suspending production for five weeks of the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid that Mr. Obama has promoted in the past. On Wednesday, he did not mention his goal of having one million electric vehicles on the nation's roads in 2015. Mr. Obama also proposed a new five-year tax break for those who buy commercial trucks that run on electricity or natural gas. Purchasers would get to reduce their tax liability by an amount equal to half the price difference between an alternative-power truck and a similar, lower-priced conventional vehicle. He also said he would seek Congress's approval for $1 billion to award up to 15 cities that provide the infrastructure needed for alternative-power vehicles, like battery-charging stations, and $650 million for a research program to increase the range and decrease the price of alternative-power vehicles. To offset the cost of his proposals, Mr. Obama proposed a familiar source: repeal of $4 billion in annual tax incentives for oil and gas companies. While Republicans and some energy-state Democrats routinely oppose the idea, Mr. Obama told his receptive audience of plant managers and union workers to urge their representatives in Congress to support it. "It's time to end that taxpayer giveaway to an industry that's never been more profitable, invest in clean energy that's never been more promising," he said. With polls showing increased voter concern with pump prices, in Washington aides to Speaker John A. Boehner circulated an e-mail to reporters quoting headlines from Charlotte about rising prices there. Republican presidential candidates also have assailed Mr. Obama as discouraging oil production, and one, Newt Gingrich, promises $2.50-a-gallon gasoline. But Mr. Obama used his speech to rebut the Republican attacks, citing statistics showing increases in oil production, acres under exploration and pipeline permits during his administration. He blamed world markets roiled by instability in the Middle East, and market speculation, for higher gasoline prices. "The next time you hear some politician trotting out some three-point plan for $2 gas, you let them know, we know better," he said. "Tell them we're tired of hearing phony election-year promises that never come about."
