Brute Force: Ford Shelby GT500 v Hennessey Camaro

FOR FULL COMPARISON @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=151466 Hennessey Camaro Dyno Test Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoIx_-P5M_A Hennessey Camaro SS Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNcZeqG082A These are the heavy hitters. The big dogs. They're not playmakers or finesse artists and they don't dish out assists. If the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is Dick Butkus snuffing out a Jim Brown thrust up the middle, then the 2010 Hennessey Performance Engineering Chevy Camaro SS HPE550 is Lawrence Taylor with radar lock on Joe Theismann's right leg. And it's not just that they're powerful and merciless, but intentionally provocative and intimidating, too. On looks alone, either of these cars is enough to make the drivers of other machines cower like a three-legged Labradoodle. They are, of course, muscle cars in the rawest, most vicious sense of the term. And they're quicker, faster, meaner and flat nastier than anything built back when Ol' Shel and Don Yenko were just guys. And not by a little bit either. But which is the better beast? To find out, we drove these two all-Americans on the street, at our test track and on the Dynojet chassis Dyno at MD Automotive in Westminster, California. Then we did some big smoky burnouts just to piss off the Sierra Club. By the time we were through, Greenpeace had threatened to blockade the Inside Line garage and the Obama administration was seriously considering a unilateral deployment of the fun police. Didn't matter. By then the tires were shot and we had our winner.

Hi-Res Videos: http://www.hulu.com/edmunds-in side-line In our recent pony car comparison test, the retro-heavy — and just plain heavy — 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS walked away with top honors in its debut. The big V8-powered coupe needed a new challenge. It was time to refocus the lens. Shoot from a different angle, so to speak. So we squared the brooding visage of our SS-badged protagonist up against the cruelest bunch of savages we could find, the range-topping 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 and 2010 Ford Shelby GT500.

Camaro Fights Mustang and Challenger - Muscle Car Comparison
MORE MUSCLE CAR MADNESS @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/ In 2002, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second human being to set foot on the moon, punched a guy in the face for accusing him of faking the moon landing. Buzz was 72 years old at the time. Go right ahead and question the existence of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT, 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T and 2010 Chevy Camaro SS and they, too, might just give you a knuckle sandwich in the kisser. Like Mr. Aldrin, they bear names from long ago that have made a collective return to the limelight. Like Mr. Aldrin, they are American heroes with unparalleled legacies reaching across decades. And like Mr. Aldrin, they have Ph.Ds in kicking ass. Their makers may have proven that they have the financial acumen of a blind yak. However, we submit these pony car icons as proof that the home team can extract their craniums from their nether regions once in awhile and knock the cover off the ball.

Fast New Shelby Mustang GT500 Full Test
FULL Mustang GT500 COVERAGE @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Followup/articleId=145566?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..1.* It's something like trying to drive the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 on a roller-coaster, only there are no steel tracks to keep you from slithering off the pavement and ending up in a flaming heap of 540-horsepower Mustang. You can't even see where you're going, really. Hard on it, the GT500's rear tires begin spinning just as you can see nothing but sky in the windshield. You're on top of the hump at the entrance to Infineon Raceway's Turn 6, and as your stomach and both right-side tires go weightless, you start a long, long dive to the left, sliding sideways all the way down the hill and around the 180-degree corner. The Shelby GT500 is so torqued up with the cornering force from the low-profile 19-inch tires and the drive from the supercharged V8 that you can practically hear the welds popping in the chassis. But something is different this time — palms are not slick with sweat, tires are not threatening to let go at the most inopportune moment and steering left in order to go right is a joy and not a reflex of self-preservation. The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 gets 2 mpg more on the EPA highway cycle this year. The Ford engineers are really proud of this. But every time we make another lap and slide down Turn 6, we have our doubts that fuel economy is what this car is about. Serving Our Inner Adolescent We're behaving like adults as the Ford engineers tell us all about the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500, even as we hear a couple of the cars making shake-down runs on the quarter-mile strip at Infineon Raceway a few hundred feet away. And in many ways, the GT500 itself is trying to act more like an adult, casting aside the muscle-bound character of the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500. As the Ford people tell us, they started with the limited-production 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, the exclusive (1,700 examples built) and revenue-enhancing (MSRP $79,995) Mustang produced last year. And aside from a few fewer Shelby badges (the KR had many to spare), the GT500 is like the KR in almost every way, except it's built at the Mustang plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, rather than at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas. You can tell as soon as you open the new GT500's hood, complete with hot-air extractors. The supercharged and intercooled DOHC 5.4-liter V8 with its truck-style iron block is still in place, but now it carries a conical air filter in its own sealed cold-air box behind the left-side headlight, an innovation that increases airflow while resisting power-sapping heat soak. For the GT500, this new cold-air intake required the migration of the iconic Cobra badge on the grille from the left side to the right side.

2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 vs. 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR
FIND OUT WHO WINDS, ZO6 OR GT500KR: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=131034 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 @ the Track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JoSB5_PF0Y Camaro Fights Mustang and Challenger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as2erdrkQbI 2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2LT V6 Full Test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziISB6n_5do Ford Shelby GT500 v Hennessey Camaro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwCFIk0xH_s Hennessey HPE550 Supercharged Chevy Camaro SS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNcZeqG082A We're looking at the 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, but we're imagining a '68 Shelby GT500KR staging next to a Corvette with one of the 427-cubic-inch V8s on the Connecting Highway in Queens, New York, probably sometime during the Nixon administration. We don't know how the cars are tuned or which driver has the better hole-shot technique, but we're calling our street race in favor of the Vette. You see, there's no historical basis for a close Corvette-Mustang rivalry. A Corvette of any year is a little too fast and smart to be street racing ratty muscle cars. It's a real sports car, the kind of car that's still fun when you start going around corners. But maybe it's a different story with this 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR and 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Each of these rear-wheel-drive coupes has a V8 rated for more than 500 horsepower at the flywheel. And with the release of the limited-edition 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, Ford has moved in on Chevrolet's price territory. The GT500KR leaves the Ford factory as a $46,730 GT500 coupe and is shipped as a rolling chassis to Carroll Shelby's facility near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada. By the time the KR cruises out of Shelby's shop, it's an $82,395 Mustang. As such, the King-of-the-Road Mustang must now contend with this $76,920 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. And though the Z06 is a few horsepower shy of the upcoming ZR1, it's not an easy mark. The GT500KR will have to play like a sports car just to keep up.
