You'd think a racing Lotus Elan would be the perfect car on a wet Nordschleife? Wrong. Have a look at how quickly ex-DTM driver Roland Asch, in the Team Classic Driver Ford Fairlane 500, passes the little car The in-car video is from the recent ADAC 1000km Classic meeting at the world-famous Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring. The ex-works (Mercedes and Opel) DTM driver was guesting in 'Fred and Barney's 1964 Fairlane. In the video you can see him wrestling with the 500+bhp saloon, yet seeming to effortlessly pass much faster cars. He's overtaken by a 1970s Porsche Carrera RS at one point, but steadily reels him in... I won't spoil the ending. Insgesamt starteten beim „ADAC 1000km Classic"-Rennen knapp 100 Fahrzeuge, größtenteils modernere Rennfahrzeuge vom Schlage Porsche 911 Carrera RSR oder BMW 635 Csi. Dass unser Team mit Unterstützung von Roland Asch im deutlich betagteren Ford Fairlane mit klassischer Bereifung nicht nur unter den Top Five landete, sondern sich auch den Gesamtsieg in der Klasse der historischen Fahrzeuge bis Baujahr 1975 holte, ist umso beachtlicher. Zumal die Bedingungen alles andere als gut waren: Teilweise strömender Regen machte dem Fairlane arg zu schaffen, da er auf regennasser Fahrbahn weder vorne noch hinten Grip bot. Bereits nach etwa einer Stunde fiel zudem der 2. Gang aus -- es standen also nur noch Gang 1, 3 und 4 zur Verfügung. Ab Rennmitte versagte dann auch noch die Hinterradbremse. Dennoch ist Roland Asch, wie auch Fred und Barney, souverän gefahren und konnte sich schnell an das Auto gewöhnen. Nach einer Gesamtfahrzeit von 7,13 Stunden (34 Runden) überquerte der Fairlane hinter Porsche Carrera RS, Porsche 911, BMW 635 Csi und BMW M3 als Fünfter die Ziellinie. www.classicdriver.com www.kjtech.com

Ford 428 Cobra Jet with dual quads. Stroked to 462 cubes with a Survival Motorsports "Prison Break" 4.250 stroked kit. Hydraulic roller cam with .598 lift. Compression at 10.8:1, running factory iron 428CJ heads with modest port work and bigger valves. Pump premium 93 octane unleaded. Engine made 543 horsepower at 5600RPM and 561 torque with a dead flat torque band from 4000 to 4800. Idles with a nice chop at 800. No drama. No computer generated dream numbers. Traditionell steht an erster Stelle der AvD-Historic Marathon, der dieses Jahr von 3,5 auf vier Stunden verlängert wurde. Hier kämpfen Legenden wie Walter Röhrl und Stig Blomqvist oder Jochen Neerpasch um Zehntelsekunden. Aber auch aktive Pilotinnen wie Claudia Hürtgen aus Aachen lassen sich solche „Events" ungern entgehen. Auch wenn alle behaupten (Walter Röhrl: „Ich komme ja eigentlich hierher, um Freunde zu treffen"), nicht auf der letzten Rille zu fahren, nehmen sie doch, sobald der Helm auf dem Kopf sitzt, das Messer zwischen die Zähne. Röhrl etwa hatte sich von Position 21 bis auf Platz 3 vor gekämpft, bevor der einsetzende Regen den 911er auf Dunlop-Reifen unfahrbar machte. Oder wie Röhrl selbst sagte: „Jedes Rad fährt in seine eigene Richtung." Der bullige und großartig motorisierte Ford Fairlane 500 der Vorjahressieger Fred and Barney (das Brüderpaar startet unter Pseudonym) wurde in der 16. Runde von einem Jaguar E Lightweihght Competition aufgeschnupft. Frank Stippler am Lenkrad hatte zwar, wie letztes Jahr auch, technische Probleme, rettete den Sieg aber ins Ziel. Mit einem Vorsprung von 1:52,3 Minuten. Der Ford belegte Platz zwei und an dritter Position folgte -- wie bestellt zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum des E-Type -- ein Competition Roadster.
