Fast & Furious 4: The Cars and Trucks

FAST & FURIOUS COVERAGE @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=143967 Opens Friday, April 3!!! In the movie business, cars are expendable. They're not respected, nowhere near cherished, subject to abuse and constantly thrashed. It doesn't matter if the cars are Ferraris or Ford Crown Vics, the job of any vehicle in a movie is to tell the story effectively — even if it must be destroyed in order to do so. And in a movie like Fast & Furious (opening April 3) the cars do a lot of storytelling. We should know; we went behind the scenes. In October of 2007, Dennis McCarthy was hired as the picture car coordinator for Fast & Furious, and after leasing a 60,000-square-foot shop in Southern California's San Fernando Valley and hiring a staff of mechanics and fabricators, he got started building the 240 or so cars that would be needed for the production — to portray about a dozen on-screen cars tied to a character. After all, duplicates were needed of every car to ensure the production never had to slow down; to perform specific stunts; and to be wrecked in the most spectacular way possible. Using documentation from the production's picture car department and in-person interviews with McCarthy and his hard-working team of fabricators, Inside Line has created the most comprehensive guide to this year's hottest movie cars. Here it is: Inside Line's guide to the cars and trucks of Fast & Furious.

Fast & Furious 4: Subaru WRX STi
MORE FAST & FURIOUS @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=143967?tid=edmunds. il.home.photopanel..1.* What's a Fast and Furious movie without some obvious product placement? And in Fast & Furious, the most obvious product placement is Subaru's WRX STI. The Subie got its role in F&F when the picture car coordinator went looking for a new, high-performance, rally-type car for FBI agent Brian O'Connor (super-dreamy Paul Walker) to drive near the film's climax. Basically it was a choice between the Mitsubishi Evo X and the WRX STI, and Subaru was the first one to say it would supply cars. So Subaru it was. Subaru gave a total of seven brand-new WRX STI models to the production in exchange for prominent placement in the film. But just because they were zero-mile cars doesn't mean that they were treated with any respect by the picture car department. After all, what matters in movie-making is getting the movie made, not making sure any Subaru survives unscratched. So all the Subies had their interiors stripped, all were fitted with straightforward tuner-style modifications from Perrin, Cobb Tuning and Veilside, and then they were sent out to work on the set. Of the seven, one was cut up into an engine-less filming buck and five were destroyed during filming. The remaining car is in a warehouse awaiting another shot at fame.

Camaro Fights Mustang and Challenger - Muscle Car Comparison
MORE MUSCLE CAR MADNESS @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/ In 2002, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second human being to set foot on the moon, punched a guy in the face for accusing him of faking the moon landing. Buzz was 72 years old at the time. Go right ahead and question the existence of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT, 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T and 2010 Chevy Camaro SS and they, too, might just give you a knuckle sandwich in the kisser. Like Mr. Aldrin, they bear names from long ago that have made a collective return to the limelight. Like Mr. Aldrin, they are American heroes with unparalleled legacies reaching across decades. And like Mr. Aldrin, they have Ph.Ds in kicking ass. Their makers may have proven that they have the financial acumen of a blind yak. However, we submit these pony car icons as proof that the home team can extract their craniums from their nether regions once in awhile and knock the cover off the ball.

Fast & Furious 4: Ford Gran Torino
MORE FAST & FURIOUS @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=144127 What Clint Eastwood did for the 1972 Gran Torino in Gran Torino, Fast & Furious will try to undo. Because in this movie, the very nastiest bad guy — you know, the chief henchman who does the dirtiest deeds and dies just before the big boss bad guy gets his — drives a '72 Gran Torino Sportsroof. The inspiration for the Gran Torino in Fast & Furious comes from a similar Torino built for Dan Widmann at Steve Strope's Pure Vision Design — the same shop from which emerged the Hammer Road Runner that's also featured in the film. Strope brought Widmann's Torino to a casting session and a star — well, a co-star — was born. The one significant visual change between Widmann's Torino and the replicas built for the film is that Widmann's car is blue, and the bad guy Torinos were painted green. It seems that blue was already assigned as super-dreamy Paul Walker's color in Fast & Furious, so the bad attitude character "Fenix Rise" (played by Laz Alonzo) would have to wear green. Little matter, however, as the Gran Torino looks dang good in green. To portray Fenix's FoMoCo, the picture car department acquired six '72 Torino Sportsroof models and one '73. As with the Charger, some of the stunt cars were fit with Chevy crate V8s and automatic transmissions, but at least one of the cars was originally equipped with a 429 and four-speed manual transmission. Five of the cars were either destroyed during production or ripped apart for parts. Among the Torinos destroyed was that 429 four-speed car. Sometimes evil must be done in order to portray evil.

Fast & Furious 4 Trailer 1
MORE FAST & FURIOUS 4 @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/ Trailer Courtesy of Universal Almost six months before filming was set to begin on Fast and Furious, the movie's picture car coordinator Dennis McCarthy was already running out of space to hold all the cars, trucks, semis and trailers being built for the production. This was way back in October 2007 and it was McCarthy's job to bring together every vehicle that would be seen on-screen in the fourth in The Fast and the Furious series. Sound easy? It wasn't; there were going to be more than 200 of them. "Reading the script, it was obvious this was going to be bigger than Tokyo Drift," said McCarthy, who had the same job on that third Fast/Furious film. "And a lot more of them were going to be 'specialty cars' that we'd have to build ourselves." So despite having more than 60,000 square feet of shop space to work in, Dennis McCarthy was already running out of room.

'67 Crusher Camaro vs '70 Super Bee 1,500-Mile Burnout-Fest! - Roadkill Episode 19
On this episode of Roadkill, it's Freiburger in the Super Bee versus Finnegan in the '67 Camaro as the guys make the trip from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and back to go race at the Midnight Drags at Rocky Mountain Raceways in hopes of running the Bee on Nitrous for the first time since the Hemi was installed. Which car will work best over 1,500 miles of mayem in three days? The 700hp, blown Crusher Camaro is HOT ROD's longest-term project car, surviving 20 years at the magazine. David Freiburger's 675hp Hemi 1970 Dodge Super Bee is his first car, having been with him 30 years. Both cars suffer from magazine-project-car syndrome: getting brief spurts of attention followed by long periods of neglect. For the first time in years, both cars were running and driving at the same time. The Crusher Camaro is a '67 model that was purchased for $700 in 1994 during California's car-crushing program; it was rescued from the parking lot of a junkyard where it was about to be handed in for crushing. It's been through a number of engines in its time at HOT ROD magazine, and the most recent is a 489ci bi-block (4.280 bore, 4.250 stroke) with 9.3:1 compression. It has a small, 224-at-0.050 Comp hydraulic roller cam, Holley oval-port heads, and a Weiand 8-71 Supercharger with two Holley 850HP carbs. The engine makes 700 hp and 720 lb-ft on 5 psi Boost, but is tame enough to drive anywhere. The transmission is a Gearstar 4L85E that's really awesome, and the Ford 9-inch is loaded with 3.50 gears. The car is styled with Center Line Auto Drags and a nose-high stance to look like a street machine of the early ¹80s. It has run 10.60 at 125 in the quarter-mile in the same trim seen in this video. Freiburger's ¹70 Dodge Super Bee is powered by a 10:0:1-compression, 484ci Hemi with ported iron cylinder heads and a Comp solid roller camshaft. It also uses a Holley Dominator carb on a custom dual-plane intake manifold by Dick Landy, whose shop built the long-block in 1995. It made 675 hp on the engine Dyno, but in the car is has smaller headers, fairly restrictive Exhaust, and a mechanical fan that pull it down to around 600. The trans is a Gearstar 727 Torqueflite backed by a Gear Vendors under/overdrive, and the Strange 60 rearend has 3.73 gears (a little too high for the natuarally aspirated combo). The car weights 4,050 pounds with the driver, and has run 11.80 at 118 mph on the motor. Rinspeed's first underwater Car
Rinspeed will present its new sQuba, the worlds first diving car, at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6-16). The car is not only able to drive on roads autonomously with a push of a button (thus without a driver, passenger or further assistance), but can also transform into an amphibious vehicle which can be submerged in water up to 10 meters (33 feet). An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels, while the propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propelling the vehicle under water while diving. When underwater, the driver and passenger are enclosed in the vehicle thanks to light weight body components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes and are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-board system.
