They're not respected, nowhere near cherished, subject to abuse and constantly thrashed. It doesn't matter if the cars are Ferraris or Ford Crown Vics, the job of any vehicle in a movie is to tell the story effectively — even if it must be destroyed in order to do so. And in a movie like Fast & Furious (opening April 3) the cars do a lot of storytelling. We should know; we went behind the scenes. In October of 2007, Dennis McCarthy was hired as the picture car coordinator for Fast & Furious, and after leasing a 60,000-square-foot shop in Southern California's San Fernando Valley and hiring a staff of mechanics and fabricators, he got started building the 240 or so cars that would be needed for the production — to portray about a dozen on-screen cars tied to a character. After all, duplicates were needed of every car to ensure the production never had to slow down; to perform specific stunts; and to be wrecked in the most spectacular way possible. Using documentation from the production's picture car department and in-person interviews with McCarthy and his hard-working team of fabricators, Inside Line has created the most comprehensive guide to this year's hottest movie cars. Fast & Furious 4: Subaru WRX STi

And in Fast & Furious, the most obvious product placement is Subaru's WRX STI. The Subie got its role in F&F when the picture car coordinator went looking for a new, high-performance, rally-type car for FBI agent Brian O'Connor (super-dreamy Paul Walker) to drive near the film's climax. Basically it was a choice between the Mitsubishi Evo X and the WRX STI, and Subaru was the first one to say it would supply cars. So Subaru it was. Subaru gave a total of seven brand-new WRX STI models to the production in exchange for prominent placement in the film. But just because they were zero-mile cars doesn't mean that they were treated with any respect by the picture car department. After all, what matters in movie-making is getting the movie made, not making sure any Subaru survives unscratched. So all the Subies had their interiors stripped, all were fitted with straightforward tuner-style modifications from Perrin, Cobb Tuning and Veilside, and then they were sent out to work on the set. Of the seven, one was cut up into an engine-less filming buck and five were destroyed during filming. The remaining car is in a warehouse awaiting another shot at fame.





Fast & Furious 4: BMW M5
MORE FAST & FURIOUS @ INSIDELINE.COM: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=144147 Every Fast & Furious film has to have at least one over-the-top street race with multiple cars careening along wildly, putting the lives of the drivers (and anyone else who happens to be on the street at the time) in mortal danger. And when it comes to mortal danger, what better car to face it in than a BMW M5? Fortunately for Fast & Furious, the 400-horsepower, V8-powered E39 generation (1998-2003) M5 is still a 5 Series sedan and acquiring and redecorating much cheaper 528i and 540i models was easy. So the production bought three old 540i sedans and four 528i models and redecorated them with orange and black paint and 19-inch wheels. Of these seven BMWs, six were destroyed. That includes three dropped off a bridge onto a road down below. The M5 was another car that just seemed to emerge naturally during the casting process — there wasn't anyone who didn't want the big, powerful BMW in the show. And some design inspiration obviously came from German tuning house Lumma Design's CLR 500 R-S version of the current E60 M5 that was shown during 2007. Of all the cars in the film, this one may be the least believable because of all its body roll during the action scenes. It looks like an M5 with the swaybars disconnected. Or a 528i with M5 front fenders.





Fast & Furious 4: Buick Grand National

So what could be a better car for a heist than a sinister black Buick Grand National GNX? And that's just what Dominic Torreto (Vin Diesel) drives at the beginning of Fast & Furious as he robs a land train full of high-octane fuel. No one in the picture car department remembers exactly how the GNX won its role, except that it seemed such a natural choice that no one gave it a second thought. Considering the intense stunts performed during the filming of this opening sequence, it's probably not surprising that a lot of Buick Grand Nationals (but no actual GNXs) were sacrificed in its creation. In fact, the picture car department created seven of them, all based on real GNs or T-Types. Four would wind up scrapped. The most unusual of the seven GNs built was one with the body mounted backward on the frame so it could be driven at speed while appearing to be going backward. To get the engine tucked under the trunk lid, however, the turbocharger and its plumbing had to be removed. Most of the other GNs retained their original turbo V6s, though a couple had Chevy crate V8s installed. It's amazing it took this long for someone to give the Grand National the starring role it deserved.

'67 Crusher Camaro vs '70 Super Bee 1,500-Mile Burnout-Fest! - Roadkill Episode 19
On this episode of Roadkill, it's Freiburger in the Super Bee versus Finnegan in the '67 Camaro as the guys make the trip from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and back to go race at the Midnight Drags at Rocky Mountain Raceways in hopes of running the Bee on Nitrous for the first time since the Hemi was installed. Which car will work best over 1,500 miles of mayem in three days? The 700hp, blown Crusher Camaro is HOT ROD's longest-term project car, surviving 20 years at the magazine. David Freiburger's 675hp Hemi 1970 Dodge Super Bee is his first car, having been with him 30 years. Both cars suffer from magazine-project-car syndrome: getting brief spurts of attention followed by long periods of neglect. For the first time in years, both cars were running and driving at the same time. The Crusher Camaro is a '67 model that was purchased for $700 in 1994 during California's car-crushing program; it was rescued from the parking lot of a junkyard where it was about to be handed in for crushing. It's been through a number of engines in its time at HOT ROD magazine, and the most recent is a 489ci bi-block (4.280 bore, 4.250 stroke) with 9.3:1 compression. It has a small, 224-at-0.050 Comp hydraulic roller cam, Holley oval-port heads, and a Weiand 8-71 Supercharger with two Holley 850HP carbs. The engine makes 700 hp and 720 lb-ft on 5 psi Boost, but is tame enough to drive anywhere. The transmission is a Gearstar 4L85E that's really awesome, and the Ford 9-inch is loaded with 3.50 gears. The car is styled with Center Line Auto Drags and a nose-high stance to look like a street machine of the early ¹80s. It has run 10.60 at 125 in the quarter-mile in the same trim seen in this video. Freiburger's ¹70 Dodge Super Bee is powered by a 10:0:1-compression, 484ci Hemi with ported iron cylinder heads and a Comp solid roller camshaft. It also uses a Holley Dominator carb on a custom dual-plane intake manifold by Dick Landy, whose shop built the long-block in 1995. It made 675 hp on the engine Dyno, but in the car is has smaller headers, fairly restrictive Exhaust, and a mechanical fan that pull it down to around 600. The trans is a Gearstar 727 Torqueflite backed by a Gear Vendors under/overdrive, and the Strange 60 rearend has 3.73 gears (a little too high for the natuarally aspirated combo). The car weights 4,050 pounds with the driver, and has run 11.80 at 118 mph on the motor. Rinspeed will present its new sQuba, the worlds first diving car, at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6-16). The car is not only able to drive on roads autonomously with a push of a button (thus without a driver, passenger or further assistance), but can also transform into an amphibious vehicle which can be submerged in water up to 10 meters (33 feet). An electric motor with powerful torque drives the rear wheels, while the propulsion on the water is ensured by two propellers in the stern and two powerful jet drives in the bow propelling the vehicle under water while diving. When underwater, the driver and passenger are enclosed in the vehicle thanks to light weight body components made of futuristic Carbon Nano Tubes and are supplied with fresh breathing air by the self-contained on-board system. At the 2010 Los Angeles Design Challenge, the designers from the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad, California, surprised everyone with a revolutionary vision. Taking their inspiration from nature, they designed a vehicle which is fully integrated into the ecosystem, from the moment of its creation right through to the end of its service life. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery. Out on the road the car emits pure oxygen, and at the end of its lifespan it can be simply composted or used as building material. "As the inventor of the motor car, we wanted to illustrate the vision of the perfect vehicle of the future, which is created and functions in complete symbiosis with nature. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept is a natural technology hybrid, and forms part of our earth's ecosystem. It grows and thrives like the leaves on a tree" according to Hubert Lee, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studios in Carlsbad. This year the competition had called for the creation of a vision of a safe and comfortable 2+2 compact car featuring good handling and a first-class design, and weighing only 1,000 lbs (around 454 kg/kerb weight). Mercedes-Benz symbiosis - a partnership with nature The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept symbiosis vehicle is made from an ultralight material called BioFibre and tips the scales at just 875.5 lbs (around 394 kg). This material is significantly lighter than metal or plastic, yet more robust than steel. BioFibre is grown from proprietary DNA in the Mercedes-Benz nursery, where it collects energy from the sun and stores it in a liquid chemical bond called BioNectar4534. As part of this process, the vehicle is created from two seeds: The interior of the BIOME grows from the DNA in the Mercedes star on the front of the vehicle, while the exterior grows from the star on the rear. To accommodate specific customer requirements, the Mercedes star is genetically engineered in each case, and the vehicle "grows" when the genetic code is combined with the seed capsule. The wheels are grown from four separate seeds. The Mercedes-Benz BIOME Concept is powered by BioNectar4534, which is stored in the BioFibre material of the chassis, interior, and wheels. In addition, Mercedes-Benz has developed a technology to equip trees with special receptors which can collect the excess solar energy and turn it into BioNectar4534. This creates a direct link with nature's energy sources and acts as an incentive to cover mobility energy requirements through more trees and at the same time maintain natural resources. Like plants, the Mercedes-Benz symbiosis vehicle also produces oxygen, thereby contributing to improving air quality. At the end of its service life, the Mercedes-Benz BIOME can be fully composted or used as building material. Thanks to the exclusive use of green technologies, the BIOME vehicle thus blends seamlessly into the ecosystem.
