The big dogs. They're not playmakers or finesse artists and they don't dish out assists. If the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 is Dick Butkus snuffing out a Jim Brown thrust up the middle, then the 2010 Hennessey Performance Engineering Chevy Camaro SS HPE550 is Lawrence Taylor with radar lock on Joe Theismann's right leg. And it's not just that they're powerful and merciless, but intentionally provocative and intimidating, too. On looks alone, either of these cars is enough to make the drivers of other machines cower like a three-legged Labradoodle. They are, of course, muscle cars in the rawest, most vicious sense of the term. And they're quicker, faster, meaner and flat nastier than anything built back when Ol' Shel and Don Yenko were just guys. And not by a little bit either. But which is the better beast? To find out, we drove these two all-Americans on the street, at our test track and on the Dynojet chassis Dyno at MD Automotive in Westminster, California. Then we did some big smoky burnouts just to piss off the Sierra Club. By the time we were through, Greenpeace had threatened to blockade the Inside Line garage and the Obama administration was seriously considering a unilateral deployment of the fun police. Didn't matter. By then the tires were shot and we had our winner.

In fact, the keys are in my pocket as I type this. Forgive me if this is a short blog post, I'm itching to get on the road. Here's the deal. The car is a PT2 unit, as in pre-production. And it's right off of Nissan's Arizona proving grounds. Nissan engineer Bruce Robinson drove it west from that facility yesterday. According to him the car runs great but has a tendency to drool a little fuel down the side of the car when you fill it up. He also said we should invest in a case of octane Booster. "We recommend 93, but it'll run on 91," he said. "I'd stop and get a few bottles." And we will. We officially leave Los Angeles for the Inside Line Ultimate GT-R Road Trip early tomorrow morning, so check back and follow along as we drive this all-wheel drive supercar 3,000 miles in three days. First day's destination? Well, we plan on hitting the El Mirage drylake for some top end runs. Then we'll turn north and find our way to Sacramento Dragway for a Wednesday night of grudge match drag racing. We hope to get there about 5 pm. Yet the 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 manages at once to be both brutally quick and remarkably mild-mannered. Its quarter-mile acceleration is quicker than any production car we've ever tested, its chassis is benign but highly capable and its carbon-ceramic brakes are mind-bending in their effectiveness. This new Vette offers an unlikely combination of performance and real-world usability that we're proud to experience in an American car. This combination is as rare as truth in a presidential debate. Honestly, most of the ZR1's competition (think Dodge Viper ACR) or Nissan GT-R)) is less capable and makes a much larger compromise in typical road driving. With the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 we have a machine that is engaging to drive, capable of making insane numbers on the test track and also a legitimate road car.

Well, take the nearly indescribable X6 pseudo SUV, chop the roof down a little, add a few inches to the wheelbase and stuff the interior full of all the latest technology BMW has to offer. Still don't understand what BMW is going for here? You're not alone. The story goes that after seeing the lukewarm reception to the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, BMW backed away from building a similar people mover of its own. But instead of ditching the idea altogether, BMW refined the concept a little, and the prototype you see here is the result. Like the X6, the V Series is expected to have seating for four. The big difference will be how much room the passengers in the backseat will enjoy. In the X6 it's a tight fit; in the V Series it will be spacious. A high roof line and hatchback rear end are the reasons. Together they give the V Series a unique look that could make or break this unusual sedan. As big as it looks, the V Series is expected to ride on the next-generation 5 Series platform, so expect a wheelbase of about 115 inches. It doesn't appear much wider than BMW's current sedans, and although the roof is obviously higher than a 5 Series, it's still considerably lower than the X6. Given the size of the V Series and its position between the 5 and 7 Series sedans, we expect to see a V8 engine as the standard power plant. The new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 used in the X6 is a good bet. Then again, tougher mileage standards in the U.S. could prompt use of BMW's latest clean diesel power plants. Both rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive versions of the V Series are likely. Look for the official debut of the 2010 BMW V Series at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Sales in the U.S. should begin by either late 2009 or early 2010.
