VW drag racing, Outlaw Turbo class, BUG-IN 35, 2010
VW drag racing from the Fontana BUG-IN #35. This is the M-Spec Motorsports
Outlaw turbo class, which is also run at
the Irwindale Drag Day races. Racers in attendance included Roger Crawford
from Heads-Up Performance, in his Nitrous-powered Karmann Ghia, Hector Urias(R.I.P.)
running his VW Beetle with the Type 1 transmission, Eric Calabrese in the
Red Baron Pro Mod VW, etc.
There are also a couple of license passes in this video. Other VW drag
racing clips from the event being posted later.
VW drag racing: Tar Babe, Underdog, Dyno-Soar, Hater Maker, BUG-IN 35
VW drag racing passes, including Jon Schweers in the former Dan Lawson CE
notchback, debut of the VW Paradise Hater Maker VW Pro Mod beetle(?), with
Kris Lauffer behind the wheel, making TNT passes, and Mike Cruz in the
insane Nitrous-powered VW single cab
bus. Is this the fastest Volkswagen bus on the planet? He's running deep
into the 11's, with lots left.
Trick or Cheat takes the wheelstand title of the event, with Larry Hanson
getting air coming out of the waterbox. R.I.P. Les Navales, from the Trick
or Cheat team.
Jesse Hardin also makes a pass, in the blue VW Der Renn Kafer Cup bug, with
Shawn Geers crewing.
This VW drag racing video wraps up with the Fleming and Aronson Tar Babe,
Underdog, and Dean Lowry D.D.S. Dyno-Soar cars all squaring off
against each other. These VW bugs have been meticulously restored, but
mechanical problems made it rather anti-climatic. Ultimately, it was Lee
Leighton, at 80 years old, who really put the hammer down in this VW
nostalgia drag racing segment.
Unlimited Street VW drag racing, Las Vegas & Sacramento 2004

VW Drag Racing: Turbo & NOS, Unlimited Street style, Carlsbad 2004
VW drag racing video from Carlsbad. These street legal VW bugs are running
turbos and/or Nitrous. One of the white VW beetles may have
belonged to Fat Mike. The light green NOS-powered VW bug is driven by owner
Phil Brown, who has been a member of the Paradise Motorsports pit crew for
many years. Phil is a low-key kinda guy; he would come out to Carlsbad, run
deep in the 10's, then go home. He didn't bring the car out to the HotVWs
Drag Days, and he didn't run with the Unlimited Street guys. If you race at
Atco or Etown, think of Phil as the West Coast version of "Jersey Joe"
Koenig; they both run light green VW bugs on NOS, they are both nice guys,
and they have both earned heavyweight status at their local drag strips.
This footage was shot in 2003 or 2004, some of it at the Carlsbad VW vs.
Import events. The now-defunct drag strip had been in a state of disrepair
for quite some time; after it rained, the track crew would be out there
mopping up water, that was seeping up from between cracks in the asphalt.
Despite the dicey conditions, VW drag racers like Scott Fetherolf, Eric
Calabrese, and Mike Scott made the trek down from the Simi Valley area.
You'll see Scott, in his blue choptop Unlimited Street beetle, matched up
against Phil Brown. At that point in time, Scott was still running a
factory VW case, but he was a force to be reckoned with.
Mike Scott is the owner/driver of the Unlimited Street silver Autocraft
oval, which is running alky. Mike had been taking heat online, from bench
racers who thought that the immaculate oval window Beetle was all show and
no go, but he proved that wrong with a 9.96(9.98?) pass.
The Carlsbad races tended to be a TNT type of racing, where people were
getting their rides dialed in. Cars would either break, or be all over the
track, due in part to the track conditions. At one point, Kris Lauffer in
the Devils Hotrod was squared off against John Leso in the blue Manx, in
what should have been a heavyweight matchup of the decade. They both ended
up running down on their numbers, but as you'll see John went on to run a
low 9-second pass, at 149 mph. Classic!
Super Street VW drag racing: PRA '94
PRA '94 from Ocean Street Video starts off with a look at highlights from
the 1993 VW drag racing season. This compilation of Super Street video
clips opens up with Greg Brinton in his Heads-up Performance '63 sedan,
taking on Gary Berg. Gary and his dad Gene Berg were dominating the VW
Super Street scene in the early '90's. About the only way that you were
going to beat the Berg machine was at the tree, because they were making
good power. There is a classic Gene Berg sighting in this clip, of him
walking next to the Berg sedan, wearing that famous blue hat. The huge guy
blocking the shot there is Hotshots photographer Bryan Robinson, one of the
preeminent shooters of the day.
The Pro Racing Association VW Super Street class was intended to be a less
expensive class of drag racing, and was therefore based on the stock VW pan
structure, instead of a tube chassis. It was a pounds-per-cubic-inch class.
However, as in all racing, it quickly blew up into a serious money class.
There were plenty of participants, running in the eight-race PRA Super
Street series, but if you wanted to win, it was going to take a lot of
work. It was the entry-level class for heads-up PRA racing, and privateers
like Chris Tool and his dad, Bruce Fordyce, and others, were a force to be
reckoned with. There was a hardcore contingent from Japan, who also raced
in their own PRA series over there; Shin Mukai and Mr. Watanabe come to
The original PRA '94 videotape was divided up into an event-oriented
structure. Creating this Super Street-only video required re-editing it, so
some things are repeated, and there are some mistakes.
