2002 Dodge Caravan -- NOISE :: Harmonic or Alternator ??
2002 Dodge Caravan SE (3.3L V6) Noise. YOUR THOUGHTS....
The noise is coming from the passenger-side of the engine. I can see the
HARMONIC BALANCER wobbling. The mechanic said the noise is due to that
part and pointed to the rubber portion on the backside being uneven. TODAY
i paid more attention and it seems the noise is coming from the ALTERNATOR.
Some online suggested the ALTERNATOR PULLEY.

89 Cherokee Harmonic Balancer Replacment
1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 6cyl 4.0 4X4
My Harmonic Balancer failed due to the rubber insulator wearing out and
causing the outer ring to slip off the hub and into my timing cover. It
doesn't sound too pretty. Removal was actually pretty easy and was done
underneath the engine. I had my dad hold a large breaker bar while i
cranked the engine for a split second to break the retaining bolt loose.
New Timing Set, Rear Main Seal, and Timing Cover Seal were done in between.
Installation was also pretty easy. Towards the end I used i large flat head
to keep the balancer from turning but there are other methods out there.

How to Remove Stubborn Toyota 20R - 22R - 22RE Crankshaft Pulley Bolt 1979 - 1995
A long (but detailed) video on the tips and tricks I've learned over the
years on how to remove stubborn crankshaft pulley bolts on Toyota 22R
series engines. (22R 22RE 22RET)
By far, the best way would be to have the SST (shop specific tool) that
Toyota recommends, but not many folks (me included) has one of those in
their garage. This is a video of some of the tips and tricks that I've
learned over the years on getting this sometimes EXTREMELY stubborn bolt to
The most common reason that you need to be able to get this bolt out is so
that you can access the front main seal on the front end of the crankshaft.
Most older Toyotas develope an oil leak through the seal. Oil works past
the worn-out seal and then gets flung around the front of the engine and
engine bay by the crankshaft pulleys. It's really a pretty easy fix for a
very messy problem...if you can get the crankshaft pulley bolt off in order
to access the seal.

2006 Ford Explorer 4.0 4.6 V6 Harmonic Balancer Replacement
Helping a friend out, the belt originally came off. After further
inspection the harmonic balancer had failed and needed to be replaced. Not
uncommon with the 4L Fords. A good sign is the belt sequels and jumps
around, along with the balancer looking chewed up. Thanks for watching!
