RUNDRTY – 1000HP TT 1961 Buick Skylark

March 29th, 2019

Make a mental note: This old Buick is not to be trifled with – unless you feel like losing. Sure, you see a big ol’ heavy Buick, with all that paint and chrome, and you think he is too heavy to get out of his own way. I can beat him easy, right? Not so fast!

If you plan to make a drag racing campaign with a 1961 Buick Skylark, you have a few choices. All those involve making massive amounts of horsepower; without which you will roll through the trap at the approximate speed at which molasses pours.

This family man took the advice of his kids and went with big cubes and twin turbochargers. The mill is a 7.0-liter on the LS platform and the turbos are Precision 7675. The whole combination is good for more than 1,000hp. Is that enough to overcome the significant weight disadvantages imposed by the steel body of this portly cruiser? Also, is this guy seriously going to run this sled in the roll racing? Let’s have a look.

Not only did he compete in the roll racing, he beat a twin turbo Dodge Viper and a souped-up Nissan GT-R, before breaking out of his class at over 189 mph. Guess the answer to both my questions was a resounding, yes!
