Rock Mountain Raceweek – An Inside Look

June 17th, 2021

It is time once again for the grueling annual event known as Rocky Mountain Race Week. This affair involves five days of drag racing (bracket) over a seven-day period. What makes Rock Mountain Race Week even more unique is the 1,000-mile roadtrip across the Rocky Mountains that must be accomplished in the race car. Competitors begin this journey with a day of racing in Great Bend Kansas. They must follow the assigned route to Pueblo Motorsports Park, Bandimere Speedway and Kearney Raceway Park. After that, they must backtrack to Great Bend Kansas for the final day of racing.

This video is focused on the driving day between Bandimere Speedway (Day 3) and Kearney Raceway Park (Day 4). The distance is approximately 460-miles and the terrain is mostly uphill. This is torture – particularly on cars with low final drive gears meant to drive very short distances.

As usual, lifelong friendships are formed along the road and at the track. Despite an insanely competitive spirit, these racers exhibit a proclivity to give their all to keep their opponents in the fight. It’s always touching to see total strangers bond through the language of bloody knuckles and shared parts as they make this punishing trek across the Rockies in search of hot rod glory.

You don’t want to miss this one. It’s special.
