Lunch Money Low Buck Turbo Silverado

December 23rd, 2021

This video can help put you on the right track for a low budget turbo build in most any type of vehicle. This case involves a 1999 GMC Sierra (Chevrolet Silverado) 1500 extended cab pickup. As you can see, the truck has been lowered (4-inches in front and 6-inches in the rear). The wheels are also blacked out for a custom appearance.

Let’s get to the performance mods. Inside the cockpit there is a dash mounted Innovative SCG-1 Boost Controller/Gauge. It is very squared-away with no frills.

Under the hood, we have a stock 5.3-liter LS motor with a handcrafted turbo setup. Despite living near the ON3 turbo assembly plant in Ohio, this truck owner opted to custom fabricate a turbo kit in his driveway. The results speak for themselves. The entire package is organized and functional. Even better is the fact that it only cost him about half the money ($1500).

He is running a Maxspeedingrods GT45 turbocharger with a Tial blowoff valve and a 44-millimeter wastegate/dump valve from SPEED DADDY. The intercooler is a 31-inch universal unit from SUPERSPEEDWORLD and the piping is a polished aluminum (and silicon) kit sold on ebay by the Yallstore. The turbo exhaust headers (with crossover) are from XS Power and they are reasonably priced to say the least.

More boost is ineffective without more fuel. With that in mind, the factory fuel injectors were upgraded with a brand-new set of 80-pound decapped injectors and a 340 LPH high-performance fuel pump was installed. Still needs an upgraded fuel pressure regulator to manage the go-go juice.

All-in-all this was an impressive budget turbo build.
