750HP Toyota Cressida – Tackles Drag Week

October 26th, 2018

It’s time for Hot Rod Drag Week (1,000-miles roundtrip, four dragstrips, five-days) again. The Mighty Car Mods (MCM) YouTube show has turned up to campaign their Toyota Cresta (that’s Cressida in the U.S.). That is a four-door touring car not often associated with drag racing but MCM is known for their Japanese vehicle transformations. Let’s see what they have done with this sleeper.

Although the Toyota seems like a great candidate for a 2JZ, this sedan is rolling with an inline 6-cylinder of a different breed. Ever heard of a Ford Barra engine? Well, this one is a 4.0-liter inline 6-cylinder with forged internals in the bottom end. It has a stock cylinder head and camshafts but aftermarket valve springs. It is a single turbo car and it is capable of making 740hp at the rear wheels. Shifting duties are handled via a TH400 automatic transmission. The car runs consistent 9-second passes and the driver talks a bit funny. I don’t think he’s from around here!

Bob Neal aka Mechanical Stig has accompanied the Cresta to Drag Week. He’s ready to get to work.

Like many competitors, the MCM crew are just trying to complete this rigorous, week-long contest. One can do that by meeting his index at all four drag strips (in five days). The Stig strategy is to get on the track early before it gets too hot and slippery and get the nine in. If he happens upon a new personal best elapsed time or dips into the eights – all the better.

Have a gander and see how he did.
