C8 Corvette Z06 vs. 600HP VW GTI – Drag Race

November 28th, 2023

It’s about to go down on this closed course somewhere near the left coast. The flagship cruiser of the GM lineup is taking on a seriously modified Volkswagen GTI from a previous decade. This one is going to be good.

As the latest and most modern version of the Chevrolet Corvette, the 3,600-pound C8 is on the cutting edge in automotive performance. Equipped with a mid-mounted and naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine, mated to an 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the C8 can produce 670hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. In stock condition, the rear-wheel drive C8 Z06 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6-seconds and turn the quarter-mile in 10.5-seconds @ 131 mph. Except for a set of lightweight wheels, this C8 is bone stock.

In the other lane is the all-wheel drive 1992 Volkswagen GTI Mk2. You want mods? This car has them in droves. Under the hood is a 2.8-liter V6 (not factory stock) with a turbocharger. This combo is good for 600whp. That’s roughly 400hp over stock for the GTI. I realize that the engine appears to be an inline unit. That’s because it utilizes a single cylinder head for all six cylinders which are only slightly offset. The bottom end is stock but the cylinder head, camshaft and valvetrain have been upgraded. Wilwood brakes adorn all four corners. At 2,650-pounds, this VW may be the ultimate street sleeper.

Time to hit the track.
