1965 Plymouth Drag Car Gets 800HP Redeye HEMI

So, we ran across EJ (and the Sick Mag crew) during grudge matches at Roadkill Nights. Fresh off a victory (of sorts) making her bones in a 1957 Chevy Nomad Gasser, she was testing her new build – a 1965 Plymouth Belvedere drag car. We zoomed in for a closer look.

Already an established drag car, the Belvedere was stripped down after Mopar supplied the Sick boys with a brand-new supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat Redeye HEMI V8. Fresh out of the crate, the HEMI was upgraded with a better camshaft and valvetrain. The blower pulley was also upgraded. Next, the Sick crew added a Holley dash and controller setup, Aeromotive fuel delivery and an E85 tune. Fresh wiring was part of the deal.

The suspension was upgraded with AFCO coilover shocks on all four corners. A a fresh set of Mickey Thompsons gave the Plymouth the hookup.

The maiden voyage was an A-to-B pass so that EJ could get a feel for the power increase. She loved it!

Rolling into the beams for the second pass, EJ was confident. She busted the gas and the front end shot skyward. Bringing the car down softly, to minimize damage, EJ made another successful pass. The oil pan was slightly damaged during the landing, but oil pressure was solid. Race on.

The front remained on the pavement during the third pass. It was a safe but unimpressive effort at best.

The fourth pass would result in an even bigger wheelie than before. EJ laid down a perfect burnout and pulled into the box. She released the transbrake and kaboom, the Belvedere shot skyward like a bullet. She set the car down hard and rolled back onto the throttle. It bounced back up (even higher) and smacked the rear bumper. This time, when the front wheels came down, smoke erupted from underneath and oil pressure was lost. EJ shut it down quickly.

With repairs to be made, EJ and the Sick Mag crew put the Belvedere on the trailer and set out for home. Don’t fret, they’ll live to race another day.
