With seven seats, an upmarket interior and great build quality, BMW's X5 makes a formidable family car. What's more, BMW has made the latest version practical and luxurious. The pair of optional seats in the boot are useful, and when they're not in place the car has lots of luggage space. The X5 has some off-road ability, but during its development, engineers concentrated on getting the performance on tarmac spot on

The BMW X6 is a cross between a coupe and a full-size SUV. Based on the popular X5, it sacrifices boot and rear passenger space for more dramatic styling and is even sportier to drive. It's not cheap to buy, but whether you go for fast and economical six-cylinder diesel or either the six or eight-cylinder petrol engines, performance and the prestige that goes along with the BMW badge is guaranteed.

The latest generation of the Mercedes M-Class was introduced in late 2011 as Mercedes lifted its game against rivals that have emerged in the decade since it spawned this segment: the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. The M-Class is nearly four-metres long and has a massive load area, regardless of which of model you choose. The '4' part of the Discovery's name refers to the fact it's the fourth version of a car that has improved in giant leaps since 1998. The latest Discovery looks much like the third edition, but it's actually in a different league for cabin quality. What's more, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is a real gem, it's powerful yet quiet and very smooth. Land Rover calls its Discovery 'the world's most versatile car' and it's hard to fault that claim. Of course, you'll pay handsomely for that versatility, but few cars combine off-road prowess with practicality and luxury feel the way the Discovery does.
