Despite the Evo coming from the factory with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, this car is easily modified. Many top-shelf aftermarket manufacturers are producing high performance parts for these cars that are practical, comfortable, and have the potential to be pretty fast. The Tin Can (so named for the radical weight reduction strategy) posted a world record 1/4-mile pass of 8.77-seconds @ 165.97 mph. That’s pretty quick.
In addition to a weight reduction, that brings this Evo to a svelte 2,085-pounds, Chris Bumgardner’s ride also has a built 2.2-liter engine with a Curt Brown ported cylinder head, a Skunk2 intake manifold, and a set of Injector Dynamics 2000 fuel injectors. Forced air induction is accomplished with a Precision Turbo 6970 billet turbocharger and an Extreme Turbo Systems 6-inch intercooler. Spark is supplied via a SparkTech Pro CDI ignition system and everything is controlled by the stock engine control module.
