200 MPH Volkswagen GTI – German Half-Mile

Greetings drag race fans and speed aficionados from every roll. If you appreciate the smell of racing fuel and burning tires, then you will want to check out this 1300hp Volkswagen hatchback.

The back drop is RACE1000, a half-mile course located at Airport Magdeburg in Cochstedt, Germany. Denny Wimmer was spotted campaigning his 1989 Volkswagen (Mark II) GTI in the Unlimited Class. Having run more than 200 mph during last year’s event, Denny and crew are considered front runners to take the top speed crown. Nevertheless, you don’t see many VWs (in the states) that can run over 200 mph in the half-mile. So, we closed in and took the camera for a closer look.

Underneath the hood is a 24-valve (VR6) in-line 6-cylinder engine with a massive turbocharger. Helping this VW to get out of the hole with traction is an all-wheel (4motion) drivetrain from a Volkswagen R32. This thing is bad. It leaves hard and accelerates seamlessly.

This clip goes above and beyond with a ride-along during a pass when the driver had to peddle the car out of a dicey situation. Buckle up!
