1000HP IROC Z28 – Twin Turbo Street Beast

This video features a car that is often overlooked by performance enthusiasts. The “Square Nose” Gen III Chevrolet Camaro was introduced in an era when performance was not a consideration for automakers. Having said that, the IROC (International Race of Champions) version of the Camaro was definitely the top of the heap.

When this Z-Car came to Jessie’s Performance, it was a nice enough street car with very little sizzle. Immediately, the car owner made it clear, he wanted a race car. Jessie was pleased to accommodate.

First of all, the exterior of this car is pristine. It is fully restored to better than factory specifications and all the body panels are steel. It is dark, sleek and sexy.

The entire suspension has been refabricated or upgraded with aftermarket performance parts (QA1 custom coilover shocks front and rear). The braking system is Wilwood and the rear end is a Quick Performance 9-inch with 35-spline axles.

Under the hood, the engine is a 5.3-liter LS with a forged bottom end (crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons). The turbo system is custom fabricated by Jessie’s using a pair of VS Mirror Image 6762 turbochargers and a big CX intercooler as the foundation. Fuel is delivered via an Edelbrock setup that includes 210-pound injectors. This IROC runs on E85 fuel. The transmission is a TH400 automatic (reverse shift pattern) with a 3,600 RPM stall converter.

All that’s left to do is climb inside this black beauty and hit the street.
