As one might expect, the BIG RED Camaro uses a variety of engines according to the task at hand. Today, the vintage Chevy is sporting a 555 cubic-inch ProCharged Brodix aluminum (block and heads) racing motor. Believe it or not, it uses a single four-barrel carburetor and is capable of churning out between 1400 and 1900hp.
So, BIG RED begins the event with the massive wing in place. Don’t laugh. This unsightly thing provides approximately 1500-pounds of downforce. Right off the trailer, he posts a top speed of 214 mph.
After that, top speed numbers fluctuate up (215 mph top speed) and down as the event unfolds and we enter the final day.
The crew has determined that the wing is yielding plenty of downforce but is also contributing to drag. They remove the wing and prepare to run what will prove to be the final pass of the event for BIG RED.
Amazing! Without the wing, BIG RED blasts through the half-mile with a top speed of 216 mph. A fuel leak would prevent the Camaro from competing in the Finals, but what a great day for this legendary racing team.
