• Heavy-duty precision-machined shaft.
• Special heat-inhibiting silicone fluid.
• Manufactured to close tolerances.
• Top quality bearings.
• Lands and grooves style driving plate for greater surface area than typical aftermarket units.
• Special fin design for maximum cooling.
• Die-cast aluminium body for light weight and strength.

Operation: with the actuation valve opened by the bimetal spring, the silicone circulates through the fan clutch, around the driven plate and back to the reservoir causing engagement. When the valve is closed the reservoir holds the silicone from circulating causing the clutch to disengage. All Dayco fan clutches also feature an accumulator plate that eliminates early morning start up noise for reduced complaints and warranties. Dayco fan clutches are built to perform to O.E.M. specifications. Physical dimensions may differ. They are designed to be used with the original equipment fan blade. Please take care to inspect the clearance between the front of the fan clutch and fan blades as this should be not less than 25mm. Vehicles fitted with non standard radiators, heavy duty cooling systems or towing packs may require the fitment of a genuine fan clutch. It is normal for a new fan clutch to be noisier in operation which will be noticed by the customer. This is due to the new unit engaging as required where as the old unit was not driving effectively. The noise is no cause for concern unless the fan clutch fails to disengage when not required. Fan clutches are designed to suit particular cooling requirements and fan blades. All Dayco fan clutches must use the original equipment fan blade with the correct number of blades as failure to do this may cause overheating or constant fan noise.

What to look for in a faulty fan clutch A fan clutch may be faulty if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Overheating or an increase in temperature while driving in traffic.

Increasing temperatures while stopped at traffic lights.

Overheating while carrying a load or pulling a trailer at low speeds, i.e., up hills. Fan clutches degenerate gradually over time as the silicone fluid loses viscosity or may gradually leak out. This reduces the fan clutches’ ability to drive the fan at a speed fast enough to move the required amount of air through the radiator and this situation is amplified with high rpm. If your vehicle is 4 years old or has travelled 80,000km or more, the fan clutch may cause these problems. In rare situations fan clutches can fail over shorter periods of time due to: Bearing failure

Vibrations through the water pump shaft can cause premature failure of the bearing. Water pumps and fan clutches share a common shaft and with the failure of either unit the other should also be replaced. This is because the damaging vibrations made by a failed fan clutch or water pump, cause an ‘out of balance’ in these units.

Damaged fan blades can also cause an imbalance and hence bearing failure.

Continual high speed running in very high, ambient and dusty conditions. Silicone leakage

Fan clutches rely on O-ring rubber seals to contain the silicone.

Failure of any seal to contain the silicone will cause fan clutch failure.

Fan clutches are constructed from cast alloys and in rare situations, porosity can also cause silicone to leak. Fan clutch diagnosis The “feel” of a fan clutch does not indicate its performance potential. The unit must be fitted to the intended application using the correct fan blade. Upon initial start up, fan clutches are usually engaged for between 3 and 8 minutes until the silicone reaches operating temperature and the combined forces of rotation and load cause the clutch to disengage. The clutch will only re-engage when the air passing through the radiator reaches the temperature that triggers the fan clutches’ operating temperature. Check under the bonnet for leaking silicone or streaks and grime build up around the fan clutch or fan blades. Also inspect bearing movement by checking fan blade tips for movement back and forth - more than 1/4 inch or 6mm movement at the tips indicate a worn bearing. As a further test, run the engine to operating temperature, and switch off. If the fan can be spun more than one revolution the clutch is freewheeling and should be replaced.

Dayco Fan Clutches are die-cast aluminium and have a machined body that helps to provide for a tight fit within close tolerances, while producing precision performance. Deep fins increase surface area for improved heat dissipation, while exclusive drive spines are knurled and burnished. The shaft surface resists slippage caused by heavy torque loads and assures longer bearing life. Top-quality bearings ensure longer life and quiet, smooth running. A special silicone fluid inhibits heat build-up to prolong service life. A bi-metal thermostatic spring adjusts the fan speed in response to operating temperature requirements - reducing fuel consumption
