The air mass information is necessary for the engine control unit (ECU) to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine. Symptoms of a failed mass air flow sensor include illumination of the engine light, bucking, long cranking time, stalling, sudden drop in RPM, surging, hard shifting, loss of gas mileage, and misfiring.
