How to Diagnose Front Suspension Problems

How to Diagnose Front Suspension Problems. Problems with a car’s front suspension system can cause a variety of symptoms, including abnormal noises, abnormal tire wear, steering wheel pull, and front-end shimmy, which is a side-to-side vibration of the front wheels. Several tests can help you determine the problem.

Things Needed
  • Measuring tape or yardstick
  • Hydraulic floor jack and jack stands
  • Long pry bar
  • Scanner tool and VOM meter (if your car is equipped with a computerized suspension system)
  • Step 1

Check the shock absorbers by pushing down one front corner of the car sharply (being sure not to press on any fragile or easily dented part) and quickly releasing it. Count the number of times the car bounces. If the shocks are good, they will stop the car from bouncing within two or three rebounds. More than three rebounds indicates bad shocks. Conduct this test on each corner of the front of the car.

    Step 2

Check for spring fatigue by measuring the curb height (the distance from a specified point on the car to the ground) and comparing it to the height specified in the shop manual. For this test, the car should be at curb weight, which is the car’s weight with a full tank of gas and no passengers or luggage. If the curb height is lower than spec, the springs are probably fatigued and need to be replaced.

    Step 3

Examine the ball joint wear indicator to check for ball joint wear. This is done by inspecting the shoulder on the joint. If the shoulder is recessed, it indicates the need to replace the ball joint. If your car’s ball joints have no indicator, jack up the car and use a long pry bar to wiggle the wheel up, down, and side to side. A worn ball joint in need of replacing will allow the wheel to have an excessive amount of play when this test is performed.

    Step 4

Check the condition of the suspension bushings (rubber parts used on the inner ends of the control arms) by trying to push the control arm against normal movement. As you do so, watch the bushings. If you see the control arm move in relation to its shaft, it indicates the bushings are worn and need replacement.

    Step 5

Begin the diagnosis, if your car has a computerized suspension system, by connecting a scan tool to the diagnostic connector. Trouble codes may appear for any of the following parts: solenoids, shock actuator motor, electrical relays, height sensors, compressor motor, or other components. Use a VOM meter to verify the source of trouble by conducting pinpoint tests on all parts of any circuit that the scanner indicates has a problem. Computer-controlled suspension systems may experience some of the same problems described in steps 1 through 4.
