Core Shifters EXCLUSIVE!! Short throw shifter base equivalent to discontinued Hurst 391-0040 (the base used in 391-0029 and 391-0033 S10 Hurst shifters). This is a custom Core Shifters base that contains a readily available Hurst Billet Plus component set (supplied by Hurst) inside a custom housing (not produced by Hurst, but 100% made in USA). It functions exactly the same as any regular Hurst Billet Plus shifter, but in a configuration Hurst does not offer. This mechanism is smoother and more robust than the original Comp Plus design. It includes a dust boot cover, mounting bolts, and installation instructions. It does not have stops and does not need them - all modern internal rail trans have internal stops.

This is a shifter base for T-5 transmission swaps into older vehicles, using a transmission sourced from one of the following donor vehicles. A Hurst shifter stick is required (sold separately, more info below). If you want to use this base in one of the actual vehicles listed, you will need to buy a complete kit - see my other listings.

GM donors-

  • 1982-1995 Chevrolet S-10 / GMC S-15 pickup truck 2wd & 4wd (will NOT fit 1990+ 4.3L V6 w/ NV3500 - see my other listings)
  • 1982-1995 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer / GMC S-15 Jimmy 2wd & 4wd (will NOT fit 1990+ 4.3L V6 w/ NV3500 - see my other listings)
  • 1984-86 Chevette

  • 1983-2002 Chevrolet Camaro & Pontiac Firebird - yes this shifter base fits, but is not correct in most cases. The Camaro tailhousing crossmember mount is angled to match the original rotated bellhousing. If you have a Camaro tailhousing, you should use a Camaro bellhousing and a Camaro shifter which is angled to match. It is a poor idea to use a straight bellhousing with an angled trans mount as that mount is intended to be horizontal (will fail in constant shear); instead change to a S10 or Ford tail with a straight mount. If you insist on using a Camaro tail with a straight bell, this shifter base is the one you would use. But if you have a Camaro, or are using a Camaro rotated bellhousing, DO NOT BUY this shifter, see my other listings for a complete Camaro shifter and a special shifter base for swaps w/ rotated bellhousing (angled stub).

AMC donors-

  • 1982-83 AMC Spirit (2wd only)
  • 1982-83 AMC Concord (2wd only)
  • see my other listings for the 4wd \"5-bolt\" base for other AMC applications

IF YOU HAVE A \"CUSTOM BUILT\" T5 made from mixed parts: If yours has an S10 tailhousing and related internal parts, this shifter will fit. Bolt pattern should be 3.44\" x 2.88\", and the lower ball center is about 1.2\" below the flange. For Ford tailhousing, see my other listings.

Shifter throw length - VERY IMPORTANT: Shifters are simple levers, formed by the stick and stub - the overall length and fulcrum height determine the leverage ratio. Shifter throw is the gear-to-gear distance at the knob, determined by the internal transmission motion and shifter leverage ratio. As such, achieving a desired throw requires consideration of both the stick and stub - ie the stick length, and the fulcrum height of the stub. In a custom application there is no point in comparing the base against an OE unit if you are changing the stick length. To get a good throw, you have to choose the stick and base together as a set. This base has a 2.53\" fulcrum height, ideal for 8-10\" stick length. Longer or shorter sticks require one of the other fulcrum options mentioned below (email to request); no one else offers these options but we do because that is the only way you can get the right throw length for whatever stick you choose.

  • 2.53\" fulcrum (default offered in this listing) is best for 8-10\" stick length. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 3.07\" above base flange
  • 3.03\" fulcrum($10 extra - see it in my other listings) for 10-12\" stick length. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 3.57\" above base flange
  • 3.22\" fulcrum ($15 extra)for 10-12\" stick length, withhigher stick mounting point to fit an OE dust boot under stick. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 4.58\" above base flange (1\" higher than 3.03\" option, similar throw)
  • 3.66\" fulcrum ($20 extra) for 14\"+ stick length, but stick mounts at 14 degree angle toward left. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 5.38\" above base flange
  • 3.73\" fulcrum ($30 extra) for 14\"+ stick length, but stick mounts at 14 degree angle toward left. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 4.28\" above base flange (1.1\" lower than 3.66\" option, similar throw)
  • 2.13\" fulcrum ($10 extra) for sticks up to 7\", but stickmounts at11 degree angle toward left. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 3.52\" above base flange
  • 2.00\" fulcrum ($10 extra) for sticks up to 7\", vertical mount. Lower stick mount bolt hole is 2.98\" above base flange
  • For all optional fulcrums, EMAIL TO REQUEST!

  • Stick length being discussed here is a point-to-point measure from the bottom mounting hole to the top of the knob threads, not the vertical height
  • To estimate throw: take your stick length and add ~2\", then divide by the fulcrum height and multiply by 0.866 to get the throw in inches
    • For most people, ideal throw length is 3.5-4.5\" (vs 5.5-6\" OE)
A Hurst shifter stick is required (sold separately). If you are not sure which Hurststick is best for your custom application, see the Hurst stick cataloghere. Selecting the proper parts requires sitting in vehicle - in driving position, with new transmission and all interior trim (dash, console, etc) in place. Define desired knob location in space and measure down to shifter base flange for overall height, and get offsets to side and rear from receptacle cup. Study the Hurst catalog for stick shapes that meet your needs. Remember to consider stick mount height, which varies by fulcrum height (see fulcrum list above); stick height + mount height = overall height. Make sure the fulcrum height works with the stick length selected. This is an iterative process. The shifter base and stick should NOT be purchased until you can do this.
