A Strong Billet Steel Hub for Your Grand National 9-inch Floater Rear Axle Build

What was once a circle track mainstay, the Grand National style is now a much more common sight at auto cross and road course venues and even on high performance street cars these days. The answer to why is an easy one. A full floating axle places the rear wheel hub on the axle tube itself, supported by a pair of large bearings. This design uses a simple splined axle shaft that engages the hub’s drive plate and the differential or spool in the center section of the rear end. The design all but eliminates bearing and seal failure due to hard cornering forces and if an axle should break the captured hub will not allow the wheel and tire assembly to come off, maintaining control of the vehicle. Additionally, brake pad knockback is a thing of the past when converting to a full floater axle assembly. Learn all about the benefits of a in our Toolbox article where we discuss full floating vs semi-floating axle assemblies.

There are many options for 9-inch full floater hubs on the market, and while the cast steel versions are strong, we know that for those wanting the ultimate in strength are looking for a billet steel hub to upgrade their existing 9-inch full floater rear axle, or to build a custom 9-inch full floater axle with for peace of mind. Our 4140 chromoly steel hubs are the answer. CNC machined from a solid billet blank and then silver zinc plated for corrosion protection, our full floating rear axle hubs accept all standard 2.50-inch GN hub components, including , , , and more.

Uses GM Car Wheel Bolt Pattern for A Large Choice of Wheel Options

We know that the 9-inch full floater axle is seeing more and more street use these days in high powered muscle cars and classic trucks. Many of these rides are competitive in autocross or road racing activities across the nation. Having the ability to run a large wheel and tire package with sticky street radials or track-ready rubber is a big need for these rides, which is why we made our billet steel hub with the standard GM car wheel bolt pattern of 5x4.75-inch using strong 1/2-20 wheel studs. This allows circle track racers, as well as hard core street users to be able to run the same hub on their full floating axle.

Unlike a cast hub for a full floating rear end, which uses an integral disc brake rotor flange, our billet hubs utilize a brake rotor adapter plate to minimize brake rotor deflection and to create an overall stronger hub assembly. We offer 8 on 7-inch brake rotor adapter in specifically to fit standard 11.75-inch with the 8 on 7-inch mounting bolt pattern. You’ll find everything you need to either maintain and update your current 9-inch full floater rear end or to build an all new floating axle assembly to your specific needs right here at Speedway Motors.
