V8 Swapped Toyota Pickup – Walk Around and Street Hits

April 16th, 2025

My favorite street ride is anything compact with a big V8 motor. This Toyota Mini Pickup build fits the bill. At a curb weight of only 2,400 pounds, the Toyota pickup is a perfect vessel for a rowdy V8 swap.

Up front, the suspension is from Stabfab. The Stabfab coilover conversion kit features tubular control arms. The rear is a four-link setup enhanced with a set of bootleg CalTrac bars to reduce wheel hop. QA1 21-way adjustable shocks adorn all four corners. There’s also a beefy anti-sway bar from a Toyota Motor Home in the rear.

The brakes are a species unto themselves. The rear disc (caliper) setup is scavenged from the front of a Toyota 4Runner with rotors from a Ford Explorer. The front calipers are from a Nissan 300ZX. The front rotors are from a Mazda MPV.

First impressions are important in a daily driver, right? The front valance is from a Honda Passport and the grille is E-Bay all the way. There’s also smoky LED headlights with Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cornering lamps. The fender flares are custom tailored from aftermarket kits and several 4Runner fenders.

Under the hood is a 1UZ-FE VVTi V8 from a Lexus LS400. It’s mated to a W58 manual transmission pulled out of a Toyota Celica.

Despite being a bit of a Frankenstein project, this 1987 ‘Yota drives, rides and handles surprisingly well.
