V8 Swapped 1977 Toyota Celica GT

November 6th, 2024

Here we go again. This time, we are checking out Emilee’s 1UZ swapped 1977 Toyota Celica GT. There’s nothing I appreciate more than a small, rear-wheel drive car that has been upgraded with a big V8 engine. The most common – and economical – method is to go with an LS V8 from GM. This time Emilee chose a different route. I think you will like the results.

Far from the moist confines of the East Coast, Emilee located a suitable old Celica in the dry climate of Texas. In a major stroke of luck, it had already been V8 swapped by the previous owner. A simple oil leak repair morphed into a major project that yielded this entertaining street machine. Should you be out cruising your local street scene and spot a coupe that resembles a vintage Mustang – but something doesn’t quite add up – it’s likely Emilee in her tricked-out Celica. The rear end says Mustang GT but exterior lamps from various makes and models opens a limitless realm of possibilities. Don’t even get me started on those fender-mounted JDM style mirrors.

Under the hood is a naturally aspirated (for now) 1UZ-FE 4.0-liter V8 engine from a Lexus. The 1UZ keeps things in the Toyota family and makes for a nice tidy package. Engine wiring and plumbing have been skillfully tucked away to give the engine bay an organized aesthetic. There’s a big aluminum radiator, a remote oil filter and exhaust headers so that you don’t forget this is a hot rod. Emilee spent a lot of time under the hood, and it shows.

The transmission is a W50 manual from a Mark IV Supra and the rear end has a 3.73:1 gear ratio. This combination gives the car a ton of bottom-end power and makes it fun to drive around town.

Recarro style racing buckets, a full roll cage and custom Speed Hut gauges round out the interior.

Now, let’s ride along as Emilee does her thing.
