The Day 6-Second Stick Shift Monsters Ruled the World

November 13th, 2024

Greetings drag racing fans, speed aficionados and gearheads of every ilk. Welcome to the Great Lakes Dragway. This is the site of the Wisconsin Outlaw Stick Shift Challenge. On hand are some of the most impressive stick-shift drag racers on four wheels – including current and previous World Record holders. These guys and dolls are battling it out for $15K in prize money. We join 1320 Video for the rundown.

In the pits we encountered the Grub Worm Camaro. Built by Tick Performance, this gear banging Chevy held down the World Stick Shift Record (6.61-second quarter-mile) until recently. During this event, the Worm popped a 6.83-second pass in qualifying. That’s fresh off the trailer. This thing is a twin turbo car with an all-aluminum small block and a sequentially shifted PPG dog box. Grub Worm is a serious contender for the honeypot in the Outlaw Class.

Then there’s Speedy P’s C6 Corvette. This is a certified 6-second cruiser that cannot be ignored. The problem is that all the bolts were suddenly sheared in the flywheel during testing. Some lifesaving spare parts have been installed overnight but nobody knows what’s on the horizon after the repairs are completed. He’s running an all-aluminum 7.0-liter LS motor with twin turbochargers. This team is one to watch.

Demon Motorsports is here with their MK 4 Supra. This 8-second menace is powered by a 2JZ inline 6-cylinder with a big turbo. There’s some great in-car and trackside footage for this race.

I’m happier than a pig in slop – and we ain’t even got through qualifying yet! You don’t want to miss a minute of this World Class stick shift action.
