Old School Dodge Viper Gets Mods Before Racing Audi R8 V10 Plus
October 10th, 2024This is a great video for gearheads. First, we get a step-by-step documentary of upgrading the hefty 8.0-liter V10 engine with a set of ported cylinder heads and a big thumpstick (camshaft). A full-blown dyno test and tune session follows the extensive modification process. After that, the enhanced Viper hits the road to take on an Audi R8 V10 Plus in a series of contests ranging from roll racing to digs.
Out in the garage, the action begins with hood removal. Next, the upper intake, valve covers and rocker arms come off. From there, it’s a jigsaw puzzle of removal and reinstallation that results in a new camshaft, a set of ported cylinder heads, a billet crank pulley and a high-capacity radiator for the serpent. With all the hot rod components installed, the oil is changed and fluids are refilled.
Time for a trip to the dyno. Previously, the stock Viper has been treated to an exhaust upgrade and some tuning. These changes yielded a slight chance in performance from 410hp to 458hp. Before any tuning is done today, a baseline test will be performed with the new camshaft and head combo. The latest changes have yielded an increase from 458whp to 520whp. Now for some expert tuning by Street to Sand Offroad in Reno, Nevada. When magic fingers had finished, the Dodge was putting down 528whp to the rear tires.
With the hood back on, it’s time to tangle with the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus. This all-wheel drive sports car features a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 capable of producing 610hp at the crank and 516whp. The Audi also features a more modern 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The Viper has a manual gearbox.
Without further ado – let’s get it on!
