New Toyota Supra vs. Ford Mustang – Drag and Roll

September 19th, 2019

Toyota purists finally have their long awaited Supra return (sort of), but did you ever wonder how the Supra stacks up against Detroit muscle? This clip gives us the chance to see the 2020 Supra in action against a Mustang GT. The first contest is a drag race and the second is a timed track test.

If this contest was decided by the sound of the exhaust note, the Mustang wins it – hands down. Fortunately, it is not. The Mustang GT is adequately equipped with a 5.0-liter V8 capable of producing 460hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. It is a rear-wheel drive coupe with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Oversize anti-sway bars, heavy-duty front springs, Torsen rear differential, a front strut tower brace and Brembo brakes make the Mustang a contender on the track.

The often maligned Supra is sometimes referred to as a “Zupra” because it is built (by BMW) on the same platform as the Z4 roadster. The 2020 Supra is a two-seater with a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine. The 3.0-liter mill can make 335hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque (but it is often underrated). Although built on the BMW Z4 chassis, the Toyota tuned Supra is smooth and responsive in the corners.

First up is the drag race. The cars line up and there’s a ton of trash talking. The Mustang has more power but is also heavier. Who has the edge in this one? Tune in and find out. Don’t forget the hot laps.
