Manic Maverick – 7-Second Twin Turbo Coyote Swapped Ford

October 14th, 2024

Austin Collins of Hot Rod Heaven has a story to tell about Pop’s 1970 Ford Maverick. This car has been around awhile, but it’s been through some recent changes and Austin wanted to update the record. Here it is:

Austin’s dad, Kendall, starts out by talking about the history of the Manic Maverick. Coyote swapped with a pair of 72-millimeter turbochargers, this Ford has been dyno certified at 1,640hp to the rear wheels. The fastest elapsed time (to date) is a 7.41-second pass @ 184 mph. The Maverick was equipped with a TH400automatic transmission and – as Kendall points out – it had definitely overpowered the chassis from a safety standpoint. Long story short; Kendall had to slow the car down to enjoy it as a streetable ride. Sad, I know.

With the engine/turbo setup running as smooth as silk, Kendall decided to slow the car down with a transmission swap. Changing from an automatic to a manual should do the trick. Tremec started the ball rolling with their TKX 5-speed gearbox. The bellhousing is from Quick Time and the adjustable clutch is a Black Magic component. The clutch pedal is fabricated using a Fox Body clutch box. It is cable operated. Even with all these hot rod transmission parts, this degree of power will be a lot to handle in a stick shift.

Enough talk. Let’s get this thing out on the road and bang some gears.
