Garage Built LSX Swapped 1975 Datsun Fairlady 280Z

While I can only speak for myself, it seems that one of the true joys of life (for your average gearhead) is cramming a powerful V8 motor into a small and lightweight vehicle. It ain’t always easy but it’s fun and – if it turns out right – it’s fast. Have a look at what Kevin Nault has done with this old Datsun (Nissan).

It all begins and ends in Kevin’s garage; from the low and slow exhaust note to the slippery fast Atomic Orange paint. Kevin began this impressive build by removing the body from the frame for a full restoration. With the shiny parts on a mobile rotisserie, the fun commenced. After months of custom metal work, Kevin finally put the body in epoxy primer and the project grew wings.

Under the hood is an all-aluminum (block and heads) 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with ported Frankenstein cylinder heads and a ported Atomic intake manifold. The bottom end is loaded with a forged rotating assembly including a Callie’s crankshaft.

The transmission is a Tremec T-56F Magnum 6-speed and the rear end is a Nissan R200 platform (from a 300Z) with 3.7:1 gearing.

Chassis, suspension and steering components remain basically stock with the exception of a set of BC Racing adjustable coilover shocks. Those awesome looking wheels are 16-inch Watanabe from Japan. They are wrapped in Toyo rubber. The front brakes are from a late model Nissan. Rear brakes are courtesy of a late model Ford Mustang.
