Eighties Drag Race – Ferrari Testarossa vs. Lamborghini Countach

September 21st, 2021

Taking it old school, we join legendary British car enthusiasts James May and Richard Hammond (The Grand Tour) as they conjure up a drag race between a pair of eighties era supercars. Shall we go out to the track and find these two old blokes as they prepare to get their race on in these vintage sports cars?

As these two codgers tow the line, they consider the potential for catastrophic failure to this pair of classic cars (from a sudden start/drag race). After some brief calculations, it is determined that a rolling start is preferred. Smart move.

The 1982 Lamborghini Countach LP500 S featured a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V12 engine that was capable of making a miserable 375hp and 302 lb.-ft. of torque. This Countach (koon-tosh) took 5.3-seconds to reach 60 mph from a stand still. Top speed was 186 mph. Seems tame by today’s standards but this was considered a quick car in its day.

Another classic Italian beauty, the Ferrari Testarossa was equipped with a 4.9-liter flat 12 engine. It was capable of producing 385hp and 361 lb.-ft. of torque. The Testarossa could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5-seconds and had a top speed of 180 mph.

Which of these vintage Italians do you think will win?
