Drag Racing from the United Kingdom 1500HP VW vs. 1200HP BMW

September 20th, 2024

We are taking a trip across the pond this evening – to the United Kingdom – for some high intensity drag racing action on a closed course. Hang on tight and enjoy the shenanigans.

Competing in the left lane is the street legal 1974 Volkswagen Passat built by Robinson Race Cars. This thing has a rolled tube chassis and a VW identification plate. The focal point of this barely legal menace to the streets is a twin turbocharged 7.0-liter LSX V8 engine with a dry sump lubrication setup. The entire turbo kit is custom including the massive air-to-water intercooler in front. FuelTech electronics control powertrain functions. The trunk is stuffed full with the oil reservoir, battery and fuel cell. It’s all artfully done.

The transmission is a 3-speed TH400 automatic. Fully built, of course. The Ford 9-inch rear end has 3.40:1 gears.

The wheels are from Weld Racing. They are wrapped with skinnies in front and massive drag radials in the rear.

On the right is the underdog. Sorry, but this BMW appears to be heavily overmatched. It’s an all-wheel drive BMW M140i with some extra features. The big turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine has been fully built with sleeved cylinders, forged internals and a giant air-to-water ice bath. This BMW grocery getter is tuned to run 8-second quarter-miles by Tom Wrigley Performance.

There’s lots more to this Beemer but, shall we get down to where the rubber meets the road?
