Charlie Brown Is Not BSN Around at Street Car Takeover Edgewater
September 24th, 2024Who’d a thunk it? Charlie Brown is a big old G-Body sedan running 5-second passes at 146 mph on motor only. Keep in mind that Charlie Brown is a nitrous car with a brand-new engine under the bonnet. Seem impossible? That’s where Tin Soldier Race Cars comes in – these guys specialize in conquering the impossible.
When the old, crusty motor blew up in Charlie Brown, the Tin Soldiers crew sought help from Uncle Tony Bischoff at BES Racing Engines. Tony had a fresh Chevy big block (all aluminum) laying around the shop with fuel injection and a dry sump lubrication system. This should be a drastic improvement over the carbureted motor that blew up.
After a long period of intense installation, Charlie Brown was finally ready for some test and tune runs without nitrous (initially). The Tin Soldiers crew loaded up and headed for Street Car Takeover in Edgewater, Ohio for some live track time.
The first all-motor pass yields dramatic results. The 60-foot time and top speed are comparable to what the original engine was doing – with multiple kits of nitrous! A second pass is even more encouraging with a 5-second elapsed time, a 1.17-second 60-foot and a 146 mph trap speed. Again, that’s on engine only.
With a pair of great passes under their collective belts, the Tin Soldiers begin to add the laughing gas a few (40hp) clicks at a time. Everything continues to go well until an unexpected crankshaft trigger failure puts Charlie Brown back on the trailer late in the day.
No long faces here. These guys are thankful for the data collected as they forge ahead to faster speeds and lower elapsed times.
