Car Guy Jay Leno Talks Performance on a Budget

March 26th, 2025

Two things stand out about this video. The first is Jay Leno and GM performance guru Tony Roma talking about acquiring a performance car on a budget. After all, Jay was one of the highest paid late night television hosts of his day. The second thing is that Jay is going to be talking about getting a fast car – that is also a Cadillac – on a budget. Are you ready for this?

When it comes to hot cars, Jay Leno has more than just about anyone. His fleet of antique and collectable automobiles is legendary. He’s not going to be talking about his $20-million-dollar McLaren F1 or even his 1934 Duesenberg Walker Coupe valued at $20 to $30 million. Instead, he will be showing us his pair of daily drivers. Both are Cadillac CTS-V models. One is a 2012 CTS-V Coupe, and the other is a 2007 CTS-V sedan. I’m as shocked as you.

Both these Cadillacs are rear-wheel drive with 6-speed manual transmissions. Either model is readily available on the used car market at a reasonable price. Each one of these luxury performance vehicles provides a great foundation upon which to build a legitimate street sleeper or a relatively quick daily driver in stock condition.

The 2012 CTS-V Coupe was equipped with a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8. Despite the plush leather interior, this Caddy could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4-seconds and turn the standing quarter-mile in 12.3-seconds @ 117 mph. The supercharged mill was rated at 556hp and 551 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s enough to capture Jay’s attention – even in a crowd of precious vehicles.
