I made an attempt of starting my Lada with a hand crank, and it went smoother than I'd thought. It was unstarted for a week. The preparations I did before starting, was removing the license plate to access the hole in the bumper, turning on the ignition and pulling the choke out fully. Of course I also checked that it was not in gear =)

Tiger Tank " Hand Crank Engine Start Up "
The hand crank starter, is the recommended way of starting a Tiger in cold
weather conditions, it also has an electric starter. These men starting the
Tiger are experienced tank mechanics, many are volunteers who help keep the
-29C degrees cold start LADA
It was really -29* when i tried to start engine of my lada samara(1500 ccm,
A battery was fully loaded at home yesterday, and me and my wife rided to
our parents something like 20 kilometers on the streets of
StPetersburg,Russia. It was 1,5 hours before we achieved parents house and
i stopped engine, Jam everywhere!
And night was cold and there was 29 degrees of cold by celsius. And morning
begins! At first i tryed to fully pull the choke lever and start engine.
There was little rpm - motor oil was too cold and sticky, starter can`t
At the second i turn on the light to make little load to battery, to warm
it up and mix the electrolite inside.
At the third i turn on the starter and motor reluctantly maked flashes, and
more and more!
Battery - 65 Ah, 5 years old
Carburettor - solex, 12 years old
Motor oil - Esso Ultra 10 w40, 8.000 km
Compression on cylinders(last summer) 9-10-10.5-10.5
1919 Buick First start since 1952
This is the first startup of this 1919 buick six roadster that had been
sitting in a barn in ohio since 1952. It was parked there with a bad
differential. My boss bought it on Ebay and i gently disassembled the
engine, cleaned out the 50+ year old oil, freed up the piston rings and put
it back together. I had to substitute a newer coil to get a strong spark
and had manually filled the float bowl of the carburetor. No fuel pump was
hooked up or water in the engine hence the short run time. This is a very
cool early overhead valve engine with an aluminum crankcase, cast iron
cylinder block, roller tappets, exposed valvetrain, zero gap piston rings,
and electric start. This car had about 14,000 miles on the odometer. Enjoy
the video! Check out my other video/slide show for engine disassembly
Hand crank starting a Renault 4CV
That's right... we're not cranky...., we do laugh a lot ......and like to
" hand crank" start an engine. Who needs a starter? We don't need no
electric starter !! This year's 2012 GPNW microcar show was blessed with a
bunch of "crank-pots" .....one being, Terry Cassem and his delightful 1960
Renault 4CV. Part of the Friday night meet and greet parking lot antics is
playing with, and talking cars. Specifically microcars. Here we see a
combined effort on the correct way to hand crank start a Renault 4cv.
