2013 Scion FR-S Long Beach Grand Prix Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race Car @ Chicago Auto Show

http://www.autobytel.com/scion/fr-s/2013/ At the 2013 Chicago Auto Show, Scion unveiled the new line of FR-S race cars for the upcoming Long Beach Grand Prix Toyota Pro/Celebrity Event. Scion is very excited to have the new FR-S be the official Toyota Pro/Celebrity car. This will mark the first time in over 20 years that a RWD car has been chosen. It was a natural choice to move from the Scion tC to the FR-S which was designed to be an affordable sports car from the beginning. Craig Taguchi gives Autobytel a closer look at what goes into making a car race ready. Starting with a stock 2013 Scion FR-S, a handful of modifications have been performed; mostly in the name of safety. There are a few TRD parts thrown into the mix for added excitement. But for the most part, the car remains relatively stock. Staring up front, the headlights and fog lights have been removed and replaced with delete (fake) units. These cars will be racing and should there be any incidents on the track, a bunch of plastic and glass shards will not be left on the track. The rims are TRD 18-inch cast aluminum units with a matte black finish that compliments the red paint scheme on the car. You will also notice the longer safety stud holding the wheel to the hub. The wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires that provide more grip for the race track. Out back there are a few more TRD accessories. The genuine TRD spoiler will be available at your local dealership soon. The TRD dual Exhaust system features contoured tips that blend in with the bumper. On the inside, the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Scion FR-S Race Car has a window net to keep the drive safe from road debris. The 5-point harness seat belts add another layer of safety while also keeping the driver planted when pulling lateral G's. There is a battery kill switch and full fire safety suppression system. Rounding out the interior safety modifications is the full roll cage. 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTEC Diesel Test Drive & Luxury Car Video Review

BMW has the 3-Series Diesel and Audi has the A3 TDI but these are both a smaller class of car. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTEC is really one of the only choices when it comes to a large luxury diesel car. The E-Class comes in a couple of different body styles like the: Sedan, Coupe, Cabriolet, and a Wagon. There are also numerous engine options encompassing everything from a smaller displacement V-6 all the way up to a large displacement high performance V-8 with a Hybrid and Diesel option thrown into the mix as well. The price range on the 2013 Merceedes-Benz E-Class also runs the gamut but the BlueTEC is only $1200 more than the base V-6 model at $52,200 making it a great buy. Diesel engines and the Mercedes brand have a long history together. In fact it's not uncommon to see decades old diesel powered cars built by Mercedes still driving around. Now-a-days diesel is back in a big way and brands like Audi and Volkswagen are pushing those engines on a bunch of models. The exterior of the 2013 Mercedes E-Class has the high-end executive look. The styling is not over the top like other luxury vehicles but it does give off the luxury vibe. The E-Class looks good without trying too hard. Up front the daytime LED running lights are now the industry standard, the headlights look great, the front bumper has a bit of aggressiveness, and the big star emblem gives proper homage to the cars of yesteryear. Moving to the side, the E-Class has sharp angular lines and a bold shoulder line down the side. Out back the E-Class has nice looking LED tail lamps and a great dual Exhaust. Under the hood of the 2013 Mercedes E350 BlueTEC is a turbocharged 3.0 liter diesel V-6 that makes 210 horsepower and a whopping 400 lb-ft. of torque. This large amount of torque helps the E350 get going of the line. Fuel economy figures are 22 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway but owners say the actual figures are higher. The 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350 handles quite well. The steering is responsive and the ride is comfortable. The price as mentioned before is over $52k for this E350 BlueTEC. For that money though you get comfortable heated leather seats, steering wheel mounted controls, a nice Navigation system, rear privacy curtain, the COMMAND infotainment system, and a ton of safety features. With this 2013 Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTEC you are not only getting luxury but you are getting great fuel economy. If you want a full or mid-sized luxury sedan with diesel, you really only have a few options. The E350 BlueTEC is classy, powerful, and fuel efficient. 86FEST Import Car Show Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ and Toyota AE-86 @ Fontana Auto Club Speedway

Scion Racing driver Ken Gushi was also on hand to talk about drifting as well as daily driving an FR-S after signing a few autographs and smoking a few sets of tires. 2013 Scion FR-S Pro-Celebrity Race Car, Shakedown and Media Preview
While this was a track event at Streets of Willow Springs Raceway, we did drive with very safe open track rules and this was not a race not time attack, but more a sampling with respect and safety for the precious cars that was due to make an appearance at 2013 Long Beach GP. So please respect the mild driving as it was not a full on time attack testing.

Best lap from Feb 01-03 was a 2:40.8 and top speed in the back straight was 117 MPH, as the day warmed up so did my front tires and i started getting a bit of understeer and my time would go up. The FR-S is a well balanced car but lacks power in a track like COTA. Im sure the GT3 driver was either on street tires or not pushing the car all the way but man i had fun chasing him down. Just for reference a well setup gt3 should clock a 2:22.0 - 2:32.0 depending on driver, brakes, suspension, and tires. 2013 Scion FR-S Review by Automotive Trends
http://automotivetrends.com/ We'd like to thank Akio Toyoda. Without him we wouldn't be writing this review because the Scion FR-S, and for that matter the Subaru BRZ, wouldn't exist. And having just returned from flogging the budget minded Scion-badged sports car around the track and across the desert we know better than most that enthusiasts will be lining up to shake Mr. Toyoda's hand once the FR-S goes on sale this summer. As the story goes, about five years ago Mr. Toyoda—a driving enthusiast himself—noticed that his company no longer offered an affordable sports car in the image of the AE86 Corolla GT-S. About that time Toyota found itself with an increased equity stake in Subaru and decided to give a passionate team from both companies the goal of righting that wrong. The target was a small, affordable, lightweight sports car with rewarding handling as its defining characteristic. In the summer of 2009 the joint effort was approved and now three years later driving enthusiasts have a very compelling new reason to part with $25,000.

Find out here! http://vid.io/xqoF While Land Rover arguably invented the concept of a luxury SUV with their first Range Rover, the 1998 Lexus RX is the vehicle that's had the single biggest impact on the luxury industry. Initially derided by the press as a lifted Camry with delusions of grandeur, calling the RX a run away sales success would be an understatement. Lexus' original crossover now accounts for over a third of the brand's total volume in America and holds the crown as the best selling luxury vehicle on our shores. Trouble is, the RX has grown over time and is now a half-step too big for European tastes. In the hopes of dominating a third of Lexus brand sales in Europe, Lexus engineers went back to the drawing board and created s little brother for the RX: the 2015 Lexus NX. The right-sized Lexus crossover is, as you'd expect, almost exactly the same size as the Audi Q5, Volvo XC60, BMW X3 and Acura RDX. That puts the NX slightly ahead of the Mercedes GLK, four inches ahead of the 2015 Lincoln MKC and a full foot longer than the Range Rover Evoque. With 6.9 inches of ground clearance the NX should be just as dirt-road capable as the average luxury soft-roader and interestingly Lexus bothers to publish approach and departure angles. In case you're now wondering, approach is 28.7 degrees in 200t and 300h trim and 16.8 deg in the F-Sport because of the flatter front end. Departure remains 24 degrees on all models. Before you ask, the NX isn't a shrunken RX and it isn't a luxury RAV-4 either. Lexus claims that 90% of the parts are unique to the NX and those that are shared are primarily related to the optional hybrid system. Thanks to the clean sheet design, the NX is the first Lexus that looks comfortable in the new corporate uniform.While other Lexus models (namely the LS) wear the "spindle" grille surprisingly well, other aspects of the new design language haven't translated well to the luxury brand's utility vehicles. The "Nike swoosh" LED daytime running lamp modules that look oddly out-of-place on the IS sedan actually work on the NX and I found myself wondering why. I think the answer can be found in the headlamp module which is much sleeker than in other Lexus models thanks to standard LED low beams. Overall the combination allows for a more balanced front end. From tip to tail there's no doubt that the NX's design won't be for everyone, but I find that refreshing for a brand long known for design-restraint. I wouldn't exactly call it the looks ground breaking or polarizing, but this is as close as Lexus has even been. Although Lexus is making an NX F-Sport Hybrid, Lexus has chosen to not offer the aggressive grille and fuel-sipping engine combo in America.Under the hood beats the first turbo engine Lexus has sold in America: an all-new 2.0L direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While the engineers spent most of their time telling members of the press how fantastic their turbo design is, I was more intrigued that this seems to be the first non-hybrid drivetrain that can switch between an Otto and an Atkinson cycle. (Mazda tells me they do not consider the SkyAcitv design an Atkinson cycle.) The technology behind this is a new variable valve timing system that can adjust the intake and Exhaust cam timing independently allowing for a late intake valve closure when efficiency rather than torque is required. Also on the trivia list is an air-to-water Intercooler instead of a more typical air-to-air unit. The result is 235 horsepower from 4,800-5,600 RPM and 258 lb-ft from 1,650-4,000 RPM. Rather than borrowing the 8-speed automatic used in the RX350 F-Sport (and the XC60), Lexus chose to refresh an existing 6-speed auto and tweak it for the turbo engine's low-end torque. The engineer I spoke with claimed that the rationale behind the missing gears was that "an 8-speed automatic isn't as much fun with paddle shifters." Make of that what you will.
