For 2011, AMG is introducing its own special version of a new Mercedes-Benz V8 engine that produces more power while getting better fuel economy -- an astounding feat, considering that increasing either one usually decreases the other. Replacing the normally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 in the $138,875 S63 AMG sedan, the new smaller-displacement 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 features twin turbochargers, direct fuel injection, start/stop technology and multi-spark ignition and produces 536 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque.

In 2011 while on the Bullrun rally I witnessed a massive accident unfold right in front of me. The driver of the Audi R8 Spyder was changing lanes and did not see the Mercedes SL55 next to him and made contact with the car at a high rate of speed. Once he made contact with the Mercedes the R8 bounced off and lost control causing him to slam into the back of a Honda. Both the Audi and the Honda entered the fast lane where the car I was riding in was traveling and we came extremely close to being tangled up in the accident as well. The Mercedes that was involved in the accident was owned by Ice T and he pulled over to check the damage to his car and was able to continue driving. The cause of the accident according to the police report was a blown out tire and the Audi R8 was a total write off.

Essai Audi R8 V10 Spyder 2010
Audi R8 V10 Spyder D'abord lancée en coupé V8, puis V10, voici maintenant la R8 dans sa version Spyder, traduisez cabriolet. Techniquement, il s'agit de la cousine de la Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, avec moteur et boîte retravaillés par Audi. Par rapport au coupé, le R8 Spyder accuse surpoids d'une centaine de kilos dû aux renforts, soit 1720 en tout. Un petit tour à l'intérieur pour vous montrer l'habitacle, fidèle aux habitudes qualitatives de la marque. Notez la forme atypique des compteurs, et surtout leur graduation : jusqu'à 350 km/h pour le tachymètre, et une zone rouge à 8500 tr/min pour le compte tours... Un petit coup de clé et le V10 rugit derrière nous. Pour profiter de son chant, on peut bien sûr rouler décapoté, ou bien baisser la petite vitre arrière en position capotée : vous êtes alors en prise directe avec le moteur. La capote se déplie et se replie en 20 secondes avec la possibilité d'effectuer la manœuvre en roulant jusqu'à 50 km/h. Premiers tours de roues en mode balade, boîte robotisée en mode automatique : la voiture se laisse mener à faible allure docilement. La gestion de la boîte fait montre d'une certaine douceur bien agréable. Le confort est ferme, mais pas bout de bois. Parmi tous les points forts de la voiture, le pare-brise très avancé permet aux deux passagers de profiter vraiment du mode cabriolet sans avoir le montant de pare-brise au dessus de la tête. On accélère, le moteur épate par sa souplesse et sa disponibilité à bas régime. Dès 2000 tours, il y a du répondant. Ensuite ça monte, ça monte, et ça ne s'arrête qu'après 8000 tours dans un hurlement délicieux. Et puis ça pousse : 313 km/h en pointe et 4,1 s pour passer de 0 à 100 km/h, c'est seulement 2 dixièmes de plus que le coupé ! Pour stopper tout ça, les freins sont à la hauteur. Sur note petite route tortueuse à souhait, en montée comme en descente, ils n'ont pas perdu leur mordant. Bravo ! Côté comportement, deux mots viennent à l'esprit : efficace et facile. On arrive très vite sur chaque virage et... ça passe, facilement. Les 4 roues motrices aident à passer la puissance, et le châssis équilibré fait le reste. La direction est super précise. Il n'y a qu'en poussant vraiment très loin qu'on s'aperçoit qu'il faut placer la voiture en mettant du poids sur l'avant. Quant à la boîte robotisée en mode sport, elle devient rapide et un plus brutale. On regrette cependant les toutes petites palettes au volant et le levier à commandes séquentielles dans le mauvais sens. Quant à l'embrayage, il chauffe vite lors des manœuvres. Voilà, il fallait bien trouver des petits défauts à cette magnifique voiture de sport qui à part ça n'a pas grand-chose à se reprocher. Ah, oui, éventuellement, son prix : 169 750 €. Ce qui en fait la plus chère des Audi, mais c'est presque 40 000 € de moins que la cousine de chez Lambo. Une bonne affaire ? On n'ira pas jusque-là...
