Fiat X1/9 Gear Reduction Starter Motor
Fiat X1/9 Gear Reduction Starter Motor Comparison - Crank Speed
I've replaced the OE Marelli starter (not pictured in this video) with a new Denso gear reduction starter from Csaba @ AutoRicambi. The benefits are: smaller, lighter, able to clock its position relative to the engine, approx 50 RPM faster crank speed, less current draw, might prove to be more reliable than the Marelli (however, my OE starter lasted 27 years, finally failed due to worn brushes and commutator - the one pictured is my spare).
So far I'm happy with this unit, however, it certainly doesn't sound "Italian"... It certainly sounds Japanese. It does roll the engine over quickly, which is a bonus!
The car is my 1982 Fiat X1/9 (Fuel Injected - original paint!!) - with a Faza 35-75 cam. Very lumpy at idle, but sounds great at WOT. In this video, the engine hasn't been started in a while (a few days), and since the valve seals leak a little.. you'll see it "puff the blues". Thankfully, it only does this at start up. My cure? I have a Mk1 1.3L Uno turbo engine in the garage that will replace the 1.5L OE unit. Muffler is stock (Ansa), except for the Ansa 45mm resonated tips.
I've raced Fiat X1/9s (CASC-OR GT road racing) and have had many of these from various model years. I've also owned Alfa Romeos. I've owned this car since 1989, but I think it's time for a Ferrari... F355!
I love Italian cars :)
