Classics Revealed: The Original Volkswagen Beetle Convertible
( http://www.TFLcar.com ) An Original Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is a
rare car indeed. Well at least rare when it comes to the classic VW Beetle.
While they build over 300,000 of first generation Beetle convertibles, they
built over 21 million of the same basic car but with a hard top. Recently
Volkswagen rolled out the 3rd generation of the iconic Beetle at the LA
Auto Show but at the same time they brought some of the original
convertibles to California. In the exclusive TFLcar video we drive an
original 1979 1500 cc fuel injected model that had only 250 miles on the
clock when we took the wheel. In fact this museum car from Germany is a
time machine straight from the factory floor.
My 1976 VW Super Beetle Convertible Project
My 1976 VW Super Beetle Convertible as of 2-1-08. I paid $1,800.00 for
this car. The odometer read 46,500 miles, but was broken so I really don't
have any real idea how many mile are on the car. The car had been sitting
in a garage for 15 years when I found it. All it needed to get it running
was a new fuel pump and tires. I also put new brake cylinders, fuel, vac,
and brake lines in just to be safe. The car has no rust what so ever, but
does need a new paint job. The original color was orange.

California car with the original blue license plates. Just passed
California smog. Starts; runs and drives nicely. Everything works but the
radio. Our local VW shop just checked out and the car is ready to go! This
Beetle has a few cosmetic imperfections such as some paint chips and
scratches, etc. but still looks nice. The paint is shiny and the interior
looks nice, too. A brand new $1,500 top and headliner have just been fitted
and really look great! There is a crack in the dash but we have a dash
cover available and may install if the reserve is met. The heater keeps the
car toasty warm and the wipers work. The radio is old and inoperable so the
new owner may want to install one. The tires have plenty of tread and the
brakes are good. There was minor rust in the floors and those areas were
just replaced. This is a nice little cruiser with a clear title and recent
tune-up. With winter close, these are a great deal compared to spring when
everyone is looking for one! It would make a great little Christmas

This bug has enjoyed the good life with just one owner since brand new. The
first leg of it's life was spent in the Silicon Valley with it's last few
years in the wine country. It has been well maintained and garaged its
Rust-free, straight body and the original paint still shines. The trunk is
nice, clean with no prior damage or repairs, even the original trim inserts
are intact and in-place along with the spare and jack. The wiring is tidy
and stock, except for a modern radio added years ago, all is factory. The
floors are absolutely rock-solid.
The interior is in fantastic shape as well! The seat covers were redone in
their original color in the not too distant past; door panels, rugs,
headliner are all in terrific shape. The dash is original with no cracking
whatsoever! Usually we find plastic dash caps on these cars - not this car
- that is the actual, original dash and it is in terrific shape! Everything
works in the car including the clock. The top is nearly new, it folds up
and down with ease.

In July 2007, I received an email from Lew Wood, the actor who appears in
this commercial. He tells:
I am the guy tha D-D-B chose to be the spokesman for that famous "Floating
VW" TV commercial in June , 1972.
My name is Lew Wood, and I was doing commercials and V/O's in NYC when I
was booked for the job. We shot it at a launching ramp in Stamford, CT on
LI Sound. The production crew was Horn-Greiner. Director Norm Greiner.
D-D-B's creative director was Tom Yobaggy. And even Mr. Bernbach was on the
They hired a stuntman to drive the VW into the water. However, Norm Greiner
suddenly woke up to the fact that I had to deliver that last line "Now,
what other car gives you this kind of quality at this kind of price?" from
the car! I said, "Norm, I'm a sailor, I'm at home on the water. I'll drive
I splashed it three times. (We used three identical Beetles, all burnt
orange in color. Splashed two of them alternately, the third never got wet
and was used for "beauty shots." Swimmers went in to tow them back to shore
after each take.
We all thought our commercial would win the "Clio" that year, but the
"Snowplow" commercial took the prize.
However, the residuals were nice!
After many years of searching for a 1972 Super Beetle in burnt orange with
NO RUST, I finally found one a few years ago in Vista, CA, and snapped it
up. I now proudly drive around town frequently and get admiring looks.
Now, you know "the rest of the story!"
Lew Wood died in August 2013, at the age of 84 years.
This commercial has a surprise in it. At the and you can watch a beetle
being driven into the water. Funny is the text in the commercial says:
allthough the beetle does definately float, it will not float indefinately.
