Here's the biggest difference between the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 and the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E550: The 2010 costs $5,400 less.
Usually, we save money matters for the end of a Mercedes E-Class road test. First we tell you that it has a perfectly relaxing ride quality and a smooth V8 with an indiscreet amount of torque. Then we describe a down-to-business cabin dominated by leather, wood and COMAND. Finally, though, we have to talk about money, and, well, Benz has a well-earned reputation for pricing its sedans higher than everybody else.
But this time it's different. When the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 goes on sale in June, its $57,175 base price will land it smack in the middle of the V8 midsize luxury sedan class. It's also cheaper than anything else coming out of Germany.

the second-fastest speed we've recorded in this vehicle segment — two
observations were easy to make: 1) This SUV handles — probably better
than it needs to; 2) will anyone care?
After all, we don't know any Volvo owners who list "lightning-quick
reflexes" among their top purchase priorities. But maybe that's just it.
Maybe Volvo is expanding its horizons. You certainly won't catch us
complaining that any crossover utility vehicle handles too well.
As a result, one thing is certain: Volvo realizes that performance is a
priority in this segment. And by that measure, yes, people will care. But
there are other benefits as well.

Building an ideal executive-style luxury sedan is not an easy task for a
carmaker. If the car turns out too soft and isolated, you lose enthusiasts
who aren't quite ready to retire in a Lexus. Too complex or high-strung and
you risk alienating your technology-challenged, soft-in-the-middle buyers
who expect a measure of mindless comfort. Get the balance just right, and
your five-passenger $60,000 midsize sedan will both impress with remarkable
dynamics and indulge with palpable comfort.
We've gathered three such vehicles for this comparison: the 2009 BMW 550i,
2010 Jaguar XF Premium and 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport.
The 2009 BMW 550i is widely regarded as the benchmark among sporting luxury
sedans with its imposing modern design, 360-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 and
legendary sporting dynamics. For a car that's been around for five years,
its reputation remains consistently impressive.
All-new in '09, the Jaguar XF now is available in a midlevel model, and
this Jaguar XF Premium includes not only a new 385-hp direct-injection
5.0-liter V8 but also more standard features. Riding a 1st-place finish
from the last time we collected four similar cars in 2008, the Brit car
should be taken seriously.
The new-generation 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport stands a very good chance
of improving on its previous 3rd-place finish. Sure, the 382-hp 5.5-liter
V8 is a carryover item from the outgoing E-Class, yet Mercedes-Benz has
spent a considerable sum to refine this ninth-generation E-Class into a car
meant to define this segment of sedans.
Opel Insignia OPC @ 2009 Barcelona Auto Show

The Opel Insignia OPC will debut in early May at the 2009 Barcelona Auto
Show, with the first deliveries to European customers to begin this fall.
Developed by the Opel Performance Center, the Insignia OPC's turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 develops 321 horsepower and 295
pound-feet of torque. Delivering power to all four wheels via a six-speed
manual gearbox, the engine enables the Insignia OPC to sprint from zero to
60 mph in 5.8 seconds.
Ride height has been reduced by 0.4 inch, and the engineers have fitted
high-performance front struts and improved the steering. The adaptive
suspension is preprogrammed in three modes: standard, Sport and OPC. Also
featured are Brembo brake calipers and an electronic rear limited-slip
differential. Buyers can choose 19- or 20-inch wheels and tires.
An aero body kit draws design inspiration from the earlier Insignia GTC
concept, with unique front and rear styling. The cockpit has such sporting
touches as Recaro seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and unique shift
In the U.K., Vauxhall will sell a companion model called the Vauxhall
Insignia VXR, with deliveries to begin this summer. The Insignia VXR will
be offered in sedan, hatchback and wagon styles.
