The New E: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Full Test by Edmunds
FULL MERCEDES E550 ARTICLE @ INSIDELINE.COM:
Here's the biggest difference between the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 and the 2009 Mercedes-Benz E550: The 2010 costs $5,400 less.
Usually, we save money matters for the end of a Mercedes E-Class road test. First we tell you that it has a perfectly relaxing ride quality and a smooth V8 with an indiscreet amount of torque. Then we describe a down-to-business cabin dominated by leather, wood and COMAND. Finally, though, we have to talk about money, and, well, Benz has a well-earned reputation for pricing its sedans higher than everybody else.
But this time it's different. When the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 goes on sale in June, its $57,175 base price will land it smack in the middle of the V8 midsize luxury sedan class. It's also cheaper than anything else coming out of Germany.
Spicy Volvo? New 2010 Volvo XC60 Tested
FULL VOLVO XC60 INFO @ INSIDELINE.COM:
After driving the 2010 Volvo XC60 through our slalom test at 65.1 mph —
the second-fastest speed we've recorded in this vehicle segment — two
observations were easy to make: 1) This SUV handles — probably better
than it needs to; 2) will anyone care?
After all, we don't know any Volvo owners who list "lightning-quick
reflexes" among their top purchase priorities. But maybe that's just it.
Maybe Volvo is expanding its horizons. You certainly won't catch us
complaining that any crossover utility vehicle handles too well.
As a result, one thing is certain: Volvo realizes that performance is a
priority in this segment. And by that measure, yes, people will care. But
there are other benefits as well.
BMW & Benz Rev Up @ the Track - BMW 750Li and Mercedes S550
BMW VS. MERCEDES TRACK SMACK @ INSIDELINE.COM:
These are the big guns from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Well, not the biggest
guns, but with prices near or above the $100,000 range, they're big enough.
The BMW 750Li is all-new for 2009 and looking better than ever. Its 400-horsepower twin-turbo V8 makes it the closest thing to a
"Motorsport" 7 Series we have ever seen. The Mercedes-Benz S550 is getting
a face-lift next year, but the current model has held up well. And with a
of its own, it doesn't give up much to the new BMW.
One look at the track numbers and you'll be amazed what these 2.25-ton
sedans can do. From 13-second quarter-mile sprints to 110-foot stops from
60 mph, these two sedans are perfect examples of what can be accomplished
when money is no object. Full details after the jump.
Euro-Clash: Mercedes E550 Sport vs. BMW 550i Sport vs. Jaguar XF Premium
2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport vs. 2009 BMW 550i Sport vs. 2010 Jaguar XF
Premium @ INSIDELINE.COM:
Building an ideal executive-style luxury sedan is not an easy task for a
carmaker. If the car turns out too soft and isolated, you lose enthusiasts
who aren't quite ready to retire in a Lexus. Too complex or high-strung and
you risk alienating your technology-challenged, soft-in-the-middle buyers
who expect a measure of mindless comfort. Get the balance just right, and
your five-passenger $60,000 midsize sedan will both impress with remarkable
dynamics and indulge with palpable comfort.
We've gathered three such vehicles for this comparison: the 2009 BMW 550i,
2010 Jaguar XF Premium and 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport.
The 2009 BMW 550i is widely regarded as the benchmark among sporting luxury
sedans with its imposing modern design, 360-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 and
legendary sporting dynamics. For a car that's been around for five years,
its reputation remains consistently impressive.
All-new in '09, the Jaguar XF now is available in a midlevel model, and
this Jaguar XF Premium includes not only a new 385-hp direct-injection
5.0-liter V8 but also more standard features. Riding a 1st-place finish
from the last time we collected four similar cars in 2008, the Brit car
should be taken seriously.
The new-generation 2010 Mercedes-Benz E550 Sport stands a very good chance
of improving on its previous 3rd-place finish. Sure, the 382-hp 5.5-liter
V8 is a carryover item from the outgoing E-Class, yet Mercedes-Benz has
spent a considerable sum to refine this ninth-generation E-Class into a car
meant to define this segment of sedans.
2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series vs. 2007 BMW M6
If the 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series and 2007 BMW M6 could talk
trash, things would get ugly in a hurry.
The big-bore Benz would snort something about its 465 pound-feet of grunt,
the kind of power that would leave the Bimmer's flame-surfaced sheet metal
in a smoldering pile on the road. The high-strung M6 would make a remark
about the Benz's boy-racer fender flares, silly bodywork vents and
decidedly uncivilized Exhaust note.

Consider that the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG is nowhere near as quick as
the 2010 Porsche Panamera turbo and you
might be disappointed. With four doors and a power figure beginning with
the number five, the E63 should be capable of a toe-to-toe showdown with
the sedan from Stuttgart, right? But it's not even close, because the
Porsche is 0.7 second quicker in the quarter-mile and embarrasses the Benz
to 60 mph by a merciless 1.1 seconds.
2009 Mercedes-Benz S Class
After four years in production and sales of 270,000 units, Mercedes-Benz is
now presenting the 2009 S-Class. With an even more dynamic design, even
more comfort and pathfinding innovations, this extensively updated new
series of the world's most successful luxury saloon is reiterating its
claim to be the standard for automotive progress.
